    Default located an old friend

    Chaps,

Just thought i would post a couple of photos I took on the weekend of a project I build with a mate @ 25 years ago.

My mate had lent it to his BIL who lent it to someone and it got misplaced some time ago ( I moved to Melbourne @ 20 years ago). He recently located it in a shed on a farm, so he dragged it home to get it going again.

The project started one rainy afternoon in the shed while consuming a number of VB's.

We had located the saw bench on a local farm and dragged it home just because it was free.

We mounted it on a base with removable wheel/axles so it could be dropped to ground level. A 1600 cc Toyota motor we had lying around was mounted on the front .

Made up a dual belt drive and away we went.

When in place the motor is controlled by a foot throttle.

It works realy well with the slidding table mounted a roller bearing.

    Pappy.
What a great find to get back.

I have a similar story, about an old thicknesser my mate got hold of. (He is now deceased).
I don't know how much the machine weighed, but there was only 1 crane in our country town that could move it, that was the local tow truck.

We stripped the machine down in his yard where it had been landed. Got everything working again and had blades sharpened.

There was no motor. End result was a Cortina motor and gear box, cobbled by belts to the main drive shaft. We also used the drive shaft and universals from the car to make our connections to the machine.

    No, OH@S, back then.

I don't know what happened to that great green machine after he passed away, as his wife sold out fairly quickly and left the district.

The amazing thing about his rig, it was unstoppable. Just change gears on the old gearbox and you changed the cutter/feed speeds.

I hope you enjoy the recovery of you saw.

I really miss the days when we had the freedom to build stuff like this without the "nanny" state watching us.

It's amazing what a bit of VB can do.
