Default Opening up my first log on the Logosol M8 + ID check?

    Hi folks,

Finally found some time on the weekend to open up this log on the M8.

It was a little precarious given it barely fit onto the mill, but I got three decent slabs out of it.

The logs came from a mate who said they were spotted gum, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

That log looks a bit like Silver Wattle or Blackwood. I'm no expert, so take that with a grain of salt, but the limited view of the bark looks a lot like Acacia rather than a gum.

I forgot to say that the timber is very pretty. I love the nice dark colour. It looks like your mill does a good job.

Thanks Simon, can’t wait to see what’s in the much bigger bottom trunk (40cm+ diameter).

I also thought it looked similar to Blackwood, but the bark is inconsistent. Regardless, it’s very pretty indeed.

Looks like spotted gum to me, fresh spotty usually looks like that and the log on the ground in the background looks very much like spotty as well.

Yep it looks like spotty tp me.

    Here's a few I cut between 2007 and 2010.
    Numbers 11, 14, 15 18, 22 and 26, are all SG

BTW best time to mill SG is between when the bark starts to turn red and when it falls off.

What was the width of the log? I thought around 30-35 cms. I have a couple of Spotted gum tress on my property that we planted about 40yrs ago they are about similar size.Never knew that the grain looked like that it's quite distinctive .you should get some nice timber out of that.

The reason some of them lool different even though they are from the same species is that they are from a different tree or different parts of the same tree.
