    Default A log retrieving improvement.

Had time on weekends when retrieving logs (post A few free logs) as the land owner wanted peace on weekends. Was thankful for that as he also wanted the trees gone ASAP and reminded me of that every time I saw him.

Anyway, I soon found out that wrapping chains around logs on the ground wasn't easy, especially when the ground is flat and the logs are straight and true. Had done some research on tongs and was toying with the notion of building a forge and some scrap 3/4-1" rod etc, etc., but one day noticed some ripping tines hanging in the hay shed that were pulled off a 7 tine ripper that was bought at an auction some 30 years ago, 4 being pulled off as tractor would only pull 3.

Below is one of the rippers in the yard trailer, thought I was laughing as the pictures researched told me a bend back at top is needed, but alas the bend was to much and about 2" of bend had to be cut out.

The tongs or grapple is great saves a lot of time and hassle. From memory opens over 800mm.

The next best improvement was buying a cheap 5 tonne chain block 2nd hand and slinging that off the frame, it allows much more control and prevents a lock up where frame and log are bound with a tight chain that is extremely work incentive to release.

Grapples are really useful gizmos but fortunately these types of logs roll easier than others so another approach is to use a set of cant hooks and roll the log end onto a chain.

I made this pair ~ 14 years ago and my treelopper mates use them pretty regularly.
