Show Us the Things You Find in Logs...
Thought these might create a laugh (or cry)...
While happily milling a mango log, I struck this little beasty. The chisel is provided for size reference and is 19mm wide.
Unfortunately, this was the first of many bolts...
The groove in the bolt is about 3-5mm deep. It broke one tooth off the chain and took the edge off a couple more, although I reckon the chain did a fair bit of damage to the bolt in the process.
Out of a tree about 900mm+ in diameter, I think I only got two full length slabs out of it.
Anybody else got photos of what they have found in their logs ?

A sawmiller I know wouldn't take the first 2 to 3m butt of the log from trees that had come from anywhere near sheds or houses, now he doesn't saw any of those logs at all now, passes them on to me & I only knock back the butt log or logs from backyards in town. Even a small 2" nail can ruin your whole day

No photos worth taking, mainly fencing wire, a braided stainless steel cable, coach bolts, nails, galv water pipe, and a lump of concrete are amongst the things I remember.

A cousin of mine had a "Forestmill" set up somewhere near Herberton (Atherton Tablelands) and he had a whole shelf full of shrapnel recovered from logs from the bomb/artillery training ranges from the Second World War. Must have been expensive for him to maintain his blades??

Not me, but when my old man was foreman in a joinery factory back in the 60s, he used to curse when these turned up in timber, especially when he had just set up a 4 or 6 cutter machine.
MarkWhat you say & what people hear are not always the same thing.

May have been from the US bombers that were suposed to go to New Guinea but didn't like the idea of being shot at, the same reason people pull up cluster bombs in their fishing nets around the middle east.
Back to topic
I milled a Silky Oak in a back yard and asked did you put any nails into the tree? Had any thing hanging from the tree? No I planted it nothing in it.
I hit a horse shoe " Oh yes I remember that it used to hang on a banch that used to be there" Only needed a sharpen as it was much softer than a nail and cut in about 6mm.

Bullets, Stainless steel spikes, 5" nails,
The most ridiculous thing I've found was 22 nails in about 3 inch of log, they were packed in tight alright

Same as most, nails, bullets, brass rods - typical kind of stuff. the worst was a masonary nail, hit it and stopped to look at the blade, had taken two teeth out and thought I had got through it so went back in, tore off the remaining 3 teeth and rounded the shoulders over for good measure too!! a bit more expensive than normal to get the blade back to good
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
Allan.
