I totally agree with Steve… if you have a lot of logs and limited room for storage then you get rid of it with as little work as possible for the best price you can. The thing about selecting timber specifically for guitars is that because it doesn’t take much timber by volume to make a guitar, you can store a lot of $$$ worth in a very small area. It just makes sense to use your storage area to the best advantage. I picked up a nice board of flamed/figured Tas Blackwood recently for $25 a super foot from a guy selling it as cabinet timber. I recovered 2 guitar sets from the $75 board, sets of the same quality at Australian Luthiers Supplies are $295 each (not a bad saving for 4 passes through the band saw and 15 min work). For Shayne with a personal interest an in building guitars and limited starage room, it just makes sense for him to pick out the most promising timber for this use, rough cut it with the end use in mind so he can store it for later.

By veneer buyers I mean't companies like Proveneer in Brisbane. They go anywhere and even overseas to buy the right veneer logs. They then slice them and glue to backing board. They have special requirements - no knots, splits or defects, certain lengths etc. Usually that means the best logs but I have found by the time I saw and store the timber I would have been better of selling the logs to veneer buyers. I then saw up what they leave behind.
Good point felix. Storing small quantities of high value.

    cheers

I can't store them as logs, ONLY as sawn timber or slabs. and have no option but to mill.

Basically it didn't rain logs a bit at a time, i.e. recieve order, cut and sell, but an absolute avalanche of logs estimated at over 150 log cube. with more on the way from local arborists and tree loppers.

    Red Cedar
    Cadaghi
    White Cedar
    Blackwattle

I plan to cut to expected sizes and for what I need re furniture and guitars, but its alot to do

If you were in this situation what would you do.

Call in a man with a good portable mill that can get the job done quickly and trade lumber for the work he did.

I bought a lucas, cheaper than hiring in, as doing that many logs will take months doing 3 logs a day loaded, milled, tailed out to a trailer, driven home and unloaded and sticked,.

BUT heaps of enjoyment to do this
