Cheers for that, cheaper than a replacement blade I think.

I've been told there are some that pick up metal underneath the log. The handheld/wand type ones that security guards use are crappy, they only do surface type metal and need to be checked every layer whilst cutting

I think it will be worth the gamble, handy for finding the lost tools in the saw dust as well.

one way of picking up steel is looking for the stain oh galvinised tends not to rust and stain thats annoying. i find generally that trees in back yards close to the house have more steel in them than ones further away. oak trees are the best trees to build cubby houses in and any tree on or near a fence line is suspect. trees near an entrance to a property are also a worry. (signs) but i'm sure you find all this out

To Date I haven't had any metal from backyard tree's that I know of.

THe best metal colection was from Exador's place a couple of years ago, his logs where 10% heavier than listed properties as they had so much metal in them He kept saying geese this isn't normal, I haven't had any metal in ages!!! Remember that Exador?

Another bad metal experience was a developer cleared about 6 acres and we set up there for 12 days and milled every stick we could get our hands on - there was some staining happening there

Anyway I find you can't stay away from yard trees and be safe from metal - ya just going to hit it

this was an ironbark tree in the middle of a pine plantation. they looked like fencing wires as they were evenly spaced to about 4' from the bottom.

i would also be wary of any trees growing right on the side of the road there are many here that have always got sompthing nailed to them they must have a milliopn nails in them.
