Lucas Mill Clutch
Last week did some cutting, went to sharpen the blade after the first log. I noticed the blade was harder to turn around, much harder than normal and I could hear a king of scraping noise also it was a bit jerky to turn, not easy and smooth like normal.
Rang Lucas, ended up chatting with Dudley. The diagnosis was the clutch spring may have gone. I finished the days milling, then set about seeing what the problem was.
To get the bolt out of the drive shaft, I didn't have an air ratchet, so I managed to clamp a set of vice grips onto the washer, this held until the bolt came undone, then needed a gear puller to get the clutch off, but had to settle for the pair of large screwdrivers trick.
After a long frustrating time and more painful questions to Dudley, I decided I needed a press to get the clutch apart and sure enough it did the trick (thanks heaps to Peter - I got him off his death bed to help me out) Peter pressed the clutch apart and determined the bearings had leaked and one was seized the other rolled, but not very well.
I replaced the bearings and had them fitted by a local engineering fella. New bearings $12ea(apparently the new ones where Japanese and this was supposed to be better than what I had??) re-fitted the new ones and press back together $25, so I got out of it pretty cheaply.
Just wanted to put a post up to help anyone else out, if they came across the same thing - hope it helps.I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Sigidi am I right in assuming that with a Lucas mill stopped the blade freewheels? The reason I ask is with the motor stopped on the Peterson the clutch seems to reengage and turning the blade turns the motor over, well I think it does, with my head under the blade cover it's a bit hard to see whats happening up top. What this means is when shutting down the mill if you don't let the blade come to a stop first it's pretty hard on the drive train. I've had a fair bit of experience with various centrifugal clutchs and this has me stumped. And as I was typing I've just realised why it does it, so when you hit the emergency kill button the blade stops with the motor, so I don't suppose I have a question anymore but I'm not wasting this labourious typing.

The Lucas has a brake on the blade, actuated when the throttle is depressed all the way. Otherwise, the blade just freewheels once the engine is stopped. I usually just leave the throttle wide open when I shut down unless I have a reason to want the blade stopped quickly.

Pleased I could help you out so quickly and easily Baron
When the mill idles, the blade stops spinning, this was a symptom of my problems with the clutch - the blade kept spinning even on idle. Also when switched off as in sharpening the blade, the clutch is dis-engaged and the blade turns without turning the motor over. With my problem, turning the blade over I could feel the compression and knew that something was wrong, it felt 'different' from normal, now I know it as a clutch issue, I won't need help on this kind of issue.
Hopefully, with this post, I have helped others sort somethign out like this too???I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Exador, I don't beleive the mill has a blade brake, just that when the revs are low enough the springs holding the clutch pads in, overcome the centrifugal force generated from the higher revs and this enables the motor to spin while the drive isn't transfered to the gearbox - hence the blade stops

The 8-27 definitely has a blade brake. It engages against the outside of the clutch with a spring when the throttle is fully depressed. Stops it within a couple of secs.

Hey Ex, can you take a pic of it? You're talking about a model 8? The model 6 doesn't have a blade brake
