i run full comp on anything under 600mm and 3 skip on anything over.
you will cut much quicker.

Not first hand info, but another miller I've worked for apparently used full compliment on Lucas slabber and 'burnt it out' slabber was just tossed in the corner of the yard and not used anymore. Dunno how relevant the info is, but personally I've only used 3 and 5 skip.

how exactly do you "burn out" a chainsaw bar,
i have seen heaps of bars that have got hot and are blue but that is from no oil/pushing to hard, there is little wait on teh bar if its oiling and you dont have to push.

Yup, hence me putting it up like this "burnt it out"
With not being so new at this kind of gig myself I realise bars dont 'burn out' but those where the words used to me - personally I don't reckon the chap knew what he was, but hey there's lots of those aroundI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

one thing to look at is sharpening a full chain , as against a 5 which seem to cut about the same , but cutting rainforest timber doesnt tax the mill . tried both on similar logs and run the 5 skip happy filing . bob

OK, I did that job with the full comp chain. The skip to me seem to do better. I just couldn't get the sawdust to clear. The full comp chain had the same tooth geometry as the skip.
I will grind my full comp chain to make it a 3 skip.

Well, WBoy about two years ago passed on that was his view. I needed an extra chain but didn't want to pay the higher price for the skip, so I found a company that could assemble a full comp chain for about 1/3 the price of the skip; at least that is the case here in the US.
