Lucky Log opportunity
I have been lucky enough to acquire some free logs from a small housing block development.
Red Cedar - 2.6m (700mm wide one way and 400mm the other)
Hoop Pine - 500mm x 2.6m
Pepperina Tree average 400mm x 3m - some awesome looking end grain
Rubber Tree average 400mm x 4m
Something (maybe an Elm) big lump
I plan to get them milled by Weisyboy
The beggars dropped all the trees a metre off the ground - I yet hope to get the Cedar stump when it's pulled by an excavator
Any ideas for what to do with the last 3 species ("Weisyboy" is not a species LOL)
See pics attached
Wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting them home if it wasn't for a mate with a 6m trailer, heaps of 2.5T straps and a 9.5T electric winch - Many thanks MurrayLast edited by Woody60; 20th September 2009 at 01:52 PM. Reason: thank you

Great to see your pics Rob
I had opportunity to get hold of a rather large Chinese Elm (apparently, that's what I was told it was by the tree lopper) looks very similar to your elm, only bigger Anyway I slabbed it as an experiment, the timber was rather pale and seemed pretty standard, nothing special, but I think the Dang thing got bluestain anyway as I said, experiment anyway and got it for nothing too, so I'll see what they are like in a few months.
Good onya RobI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Hi Woody,
I got a rubber tree a while back from the tree loppers, would have been about same as yours, mine had a bend in the middle so cut it thru at that point.... I cut it up into boards 100x25 mostly and other odd sizes, was no drama to cut, havent seen any borers or other bugs in it so far, the white rubber will ooze out a bit when u cut the bark.. specially when cut fresh, just let it dry and peel it off or wash with water, bark peeled off easily, colour is whitish with some small flecks of orange/tan throughout, nothing spectacular but allright never the less, exposed to the sunlight it was going an orange shade so it will most likely darken with age.
According to the wood explorer data base there is 8 species called rubber tree, some dark ones amongst them, many uses furniture/joinery being two... so cut him up seal stack and dry and see what happens....
Is it the one with the bit of rot in the middle???
If its not all soft, spongey and useless u might get some interesting colour change there?
Have seen the same thing in mango, tree starts to rot/die and goes brown, can look quite interesting. nail holes as well

rootball
Woody,
Do u plan on removing the dirt off the roots then mill or just cut the roots off then mill?
I would consider washing dirt off (it is a pain tho and the risk of hitting dirt pockets) then mill the whole thing as is..might find some very interesting grain patterns where the roots change direction, I have done a raintree rootball that I got from the tip, not as good as I hoped but your cedar might be different, something to consider

Dunno if Carl will be interested in slabbing right through that root ball, I wanted to do it once, with bluey balls, but didn't have pressure cleaner and it just took too bloody long, never even switched the saw on for 'em
Besides, now I've done a bit more milling, cutting through the inevitable soil which will be stuck in the root mass somewhere, just won't be fun.I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
