    Few questions:
#1: How are you getting all the dirt off the rootball? And are you getting all of it, or just most before running a blade through it?
#2: What kind of mill you using?

They is no way I could get something like this on my Woodmizer! I'd have to carve it up with a chainsaw mill, and hope to get enough return on the useable wood to justify the loss in the shavings!

#3: How long does it take for a rootball slab to dry compared to 'normal' wood? Much difference? Air-drying?

    Scott (think.....trackhoe) B
Hi Scott, thanks for your interest...firstly,all or most of the dirt is simply washed away using regular garden hose(it is loam so it is fairly easy to remove),secondly, the mill is a Lucas swing blade mill, and thirdly, the wood seasons rapidly...a huge differance compared to'normal ' wood...probably 10 fold drying time...

I think it's just as well you persevered digging out this mango stump and that it was so large it took four hours to excavate. Things have been a little quiet on the milling forum for a while. I think Al and Carl must be away and others have retired so this WIP has been most interesting.

Have you considered reinventing yourself as Mangostump (MM to MS: Not too big a jump) ?

Keep the piccys coming. I'm fascinated by all these book matched pairs. It's something I have never done.

    Regards

Hey Paul...have been thinking of changing my alias to Mangoman ,never thought i would ever say that, but gee, i have a much greater respect for it now,it is a really stunning wood at times.Book matching really adds another dimension to milling, almost turns the timber into an art form..i get so excited when they come off the saw,it makes the whole process worthwhile..the stump not quite ready for transport,a little more prunning left to do (presently 11 foot wide x 20 foot long)...will keep the pics coming...really glad your enjoying 'em...

Here's some pics of a freeform slab, dimensionally 80mm thick x 700mm long x 550mm wide,(to give you an idea of scale)...milled this one few days ago, from a chunk pruned of the outside of the rootball...can't wait to get into the thick stuff.....

Everything milled so far has come from trimmings off the very outer of the root ball.....seriously...still about 20 foot high(got backhoe to stand it upright),so that we could clean and trim it more easily..will post pics of it tomorrow, you wont believe your eyes..it is a giant!!!!

When you first posted this thread, I noted the title "Mango Stump", and though that it was a fine name. Sort of reminiscent of '50s movie stars, or maybe a character from a Bond movie set in Queensland . Strong, yet a bit mysterious.

Oh, and thank you very much for all the photos and information in this thread.

I thought initially there might have been a teeny weeny typo here, but from a later post clearly there wasn't. It's just a monster .

Like FenceFurniture I'd be interested in seeing what remains. You may have to put something alongside the stump to get an idea of scale. I'd like to suggest a Clydesdale .
