I dont yet have experience with a forest mill. However I just bought a rough homrmade copy.
The bloke that I bought it off has a mate that has another copy.
This is run as a business and has done a lot of work.
I can get his number if you require

they where a bloody good portable mill for their time but the main thing to watch now is replacement parts as they stopped building them about 5 years ago I was looking at one afew years back before I got the 1st Lucas and when they quoted $4500 for a gearbox when I was in there getting some insert teeth from Maquarrie in melb i asked about gearboxes and parts again and they said they had the last one on the shelf and anyone wanting one would just get the drawings and they would have to find their own engineer to fab up the parts so it aint gonna be cheap !

What are you planning to saw if your thinking of pulling full 12 deep by 10" wide horizontal cuts they struggle and if your going to do it replace the std 8 gauge horizontal saw for a 6 gauge with good side clearance My cousin had one for years but hardly used it for sawing large sections he use to do those across the old flattop and breast bench .

Do you have the contact details for Macquarie?
And do you have anymore details of the blades?
The one I bought is a rough Homemade copy of a Forrest mill. It used a toyota six cylinder car motor and uses only belt drive. No gear box. I suspect that it probably has enough power
The other one that I mentioned has a Deutz about 37hp. It uses a manufactured clutch and again is only belt drive.
Both of the owners like you said that the gearbox can be a problem.
I saw a real forest mill last year that had a nissan four cyclider diesel running it.

I have got a izusu four cylinder diesel to replace the toyota engine.
I have quite a bit of work to do to get it operational.

I helped a bloke cut a bunch of pine with a lucas mill and I was impressed with the machine. This bloke did not have the blade sharpened well and the same with the slabbing attachment.
Also did not have good log handling setup.
It was a great learning exercise and I have got a much better idea of what to do to make the saw into a going concern.
Once I learn how I can post some images of the three saws that I mentioned

Hi everyone
I have a 30kw three phase powerd forestmill
i have restored the framework and rebuilt the gearbox
I have had diamond edge retip the saw blades that i have
I have never seen one working and cant find any information on it anywhere
How good are they this one looks like it will destroy hardwood logs with its 30kw electric equivalent to 100hp deisel motor in torque
i believe there was quite a few different ways to power them
Any photos or information on them would be greatly appreciated as im assembling it soon in my sawmill shed and will be putting it to work along side my three phase powered converted to horizontal wolfrenden bandsaw i made
