Cheers Texx! I hope I am not too boring,

Now even I will admit I get carried away some times. My head is too full of all sorts of "stuff" ,and like the nerdy primary school kid I feel everyone needs to know all this. Sometimes I get over excited and get to the end of a post and forgot what the original thread was about and have to go back and delete most of what I wrote.

Anyway what many of us seem to forget is these forums are a melting pot of a very wide range people all operating in a different "user spaces". We see rank amateurs who are still working out which way to hold a hammer, over active learners who know enough to be dangerous, seasoned weekend warriors that can turn out some amazing stuff, those that have to earn a crust using wood so focus on minimal cost - high output, artisans whose focus is high on form, thru to people who like to futz around in the sheds and kick the odd tyre, plus a combination of all of the above.

An important aspect about a respondent in providing advice is to consider where the questioner sits in this "user space". The user in turn needs to understand where the respondent sits in the "user space". I reckon 90% of disagreements come about because of this.

Same here, sometime's it's just better to shut up than comment. Especially if you're thinking of criticising a pen turner

I'd be more impressed by pen turners if they made a bit more of their pens. Come on you guys, how about some home made nibs, ball points and spring mechanisms.

I have thought about making a pen from scratch, turning the bit's out of stainless and brass and such. It's one of those gunnadoos

Alright - turning stainless eh, now you have my attention!

I have seen a guy make a fountain pen from a piece of bronze rod. He made everything except the nib using a jewelers lathe, jees it looked nice!
According to the maker, the big challenge in making them, is making one that doesn't leak - now I reckon that's real skill!

Stainless is really challenging to turn so maybe just experiment with a brass one first and get the feel for it?

The ideal tooling is slightly different in profile than other metals and it also has to be spot on or the SS work hardens and becomes impossible to cut. There's nothing more soul destroying when turning some thin walled SS and you find it isn't cutting so you drive the cutting tool a little harder and BANG the tube just folds up and collapses like a paper straw

I'm really only a futzer when it comes to SS turning and I find it hard to get a really nice milled finish with it as well.

How about we just list you as an "all round good bloke" and then the rest doesn't matter?
