Default nothing to do with milling

I don't want anybody to get upset or peed off, I just did a quick look at some numbers, those that reply and those that just view a post as a percentage from the first page only.... it is less than one percent that reply to a thread, surely more of us have something to say....yes I know..don't call me shirley

That's pretty standard on most forums pete.
Lots of people are just looking and learning, or too scared to say something wrong or whatever.

Don't be frightened - chime in with a question or two.

I'm a looker, I don't mill, but I like to perve on all the different types of timber being milled, especially the lesser known timbers.

i try to keep my nose or replies to a minimum for several reasons , one i was brought up to shut up unless you have some thing worth while to say ( eyes and ears open , mouth shut ) and another reason is i have found that there are a few people in the forum that are very very thin skinned ( mainly in the pen section ) and if there is two ways of reading some thing they tend to read it the wrong way then blow it out of proportion and get upset ( they dont under stand my bluntness and strange sense of humour ), a few weeks back i used the word "secret" in a post it was taken to heart by some and almost started a civil war ,so i keep as quiet as i can so i dont upset anyone .

I was taught that you have two eye's, two ears and one mouth - and you should use them in that proprtion... dunno how it unfolds when 10 fingers on a keyboard is thrown in for forums???

The number of replies divided by the number of views x100 for a percentage....this thread is upto nearly one percent!

It certainly isn't my intention to upset anyone with this thread and it's fine if u only read without contributing ( I only read as well sometimes) but it just struck me on one particular thread the high number of views and nobody saying much and I thought Is this indicative of all threads? and it seems yep pretty much

On the Arboristsite the reply rate is about 4 % in the chainsaw forum and 2.5% in the milling forum
    but
they are worldwide forums, large membership on a much narrower field than WWF
    or
it just could be that user community feels more involved
    and
While there is a lot of good info, many of the responses in the chainsaw forum are content poor, ie very short, taking the , troll and troll baiting, brand bashers etc.

Its fine if people want to just lurk in any forum. I lurk in some forums just watching all the sorts of amazing things people are up to and to dobbemin if necessary!

I'm scared of texx and therefore afraid to say very much. However, if the pen is mightier than the sword, I'd hate to tread on any toes in a sword related forum!

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

Was going to let this one go through to the keeper but i guess with 146 views and only 12 posts the % need some help.

Firstly i find that different sections of the forum seem to behave diferently so if this were posted under a different section or one that covered the whole forum not just the "milling" section then the replies would have different content.

So Shirley - remember that on a forum the reader has little or no guarantee of the experience or knowledge of the poster so the advice /thoughts/opinions given should be taken with some care (or even a grain of salt). Although we may know the "trade" that person (poster) is in we are not sure of their "abilities" or expertise or competency in that trade.

    - As i said different sections behave differently and in some sections you get members that seem to need to post their thoughts then follow every other persons post with their opinion on that as well - this can tend to make "nervous" people "hang back" in case they get it wrong or upset someone.
    - Even when i start the thread i try to hang back and let others respond for a time before i come back with thoughts/thanks/replies to questions.
    - Then there are the posters who continue to relate to "third party" material/opinions/websites/forums or include links to "go see". - these canbe helpful but also time consuming checking them out., so you lose interest.
    - Then the posts that go on and on and on and on - you know what i mean if it is longer than about 10 lines i get sick of reading it.
    - And of course there are those that dont answer the question, welcome the contributor, encourage the poster but just run their own agenda on safety -govt regulations etc that "they" think is more important than whatever the thread was created for.

I personally use "quick links" then "Today's posts" to read the days stuff i missed then i watch iSpy so see all posts coming up. This keeps me watching all sections and then read whatever i think maybe knowledgeable or stuff i maybe able to contribute to.

So different sections - different manners - different knowledge bases - different people - and as another member says some of the forum sections are not as "nice" as others so he wont go there at all. - me my skin i sthick so i can take it from the best of em

Hope that contributes to your thread and gets others "talking"

    Cheers
    regards

    David
