New to milling, need advice.
Hi
I need some advice on how best to tackle a fallen log in my backyard.

I'm primarily interested in getting some bowl blanks out of it. I have managed to hack off the end of one section and ended up with the following

My plan was to next cut the middle heartwood section out, leaving two halves that should hopefully turn nicely once trimmed.
Is that the best way to do it? Is there anything I'm missing? Should I cut the sections bigger or smaller or is that a function of how much my lathe can handle/how big I want the bowl to be?
Also, I have been assuming that I'm dealing with a red gum here. Is that correct?
Cheers
Hugh

Hi Hugh, If you could take a picture of the bark and if possible the leaves and seeds it would help in identifying the timber. Myguess from the picture would be grey ironbark but I could be wrong. Cheers WC

Cut the logs twice as long as the diameter to allow for end checking and then split down the heart.
Not Redgum, Redgum is smooth bark. Possibly Red MahoganyCheers

Also is there a best way to deal with forks? Or are they too much for a beginner Turner anyway?

I can't see the bark pictures that you uploaded. In regards to turning forks if you split it in half so you get 2 Y shaped pieces and then trim it to be roughly round it will be easier to turn. have a look at this video it explains it in more detail https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icIiAfj6sdw Cheers WC
