Thread: Milling a Cal Redwood Log with Rot

Been getting stuck into the redwood logs I've got and I though I was going to take the top off this one and then slab it.

The problem is how far does the rot go?

Now I had intended to take this down until I got to a good slab width but the rot is making me nervous. At the moment the width is only about 700 which is getting close to a decent width but is not really wide enough to really tempt me to take a slab. The rot is so far solid and would be better described as spalted and so cost extra .

How does spalted redwood behave when it dries? Does it really spalt or is it just rot? Ie will it hold its integtrity as it dries or am I better off forgetting the slab and taking what I can in boards?

I've got another big log that I might be able to get some big slab out of but it has some rot as well, although not as bad.

I've never milled a redwood with rot before so I've got no idea what my best course is.
