Milling a Cedar for the Labrador Mens Shed
Well apparently just after I had left the Maleny Wood Show, a member of the Labrador Mens Shed called in on Carl (Weisyboy) to get a cedar tree they had cut down milled up, and bless him he gave them my number . Anyway, being the generous soul I am, I volunteered my time to help them out.
Well it was raining at my place all night and this morning, but over where the tree was, it was apparently fine so off I went. Unfortunately the sunshine only lasted 0.5 hour before the rain set in. Set up the marquee canopy over the top, put on my raincoat, then kept going. It didn't stop raining for another 2 hours .
They had 2 logs, one ~2.2m long and 0.4m to 0.3m diameter. The other was ~1m long and ~0.35m dia but with a number of branches coming off it. I had quite a few issues with my new log metals stands (again), so ended up cutting the smaller log in half to use and get the larger log off the ground, so setting up took almost 2 hours (in the rain) .
My milling ladder is also still down at Rosebank, so I used an old timber ladder I had to mill the log, unfortunately it is only 2.4m long so had to support the mill myself for the last 300mm (I put the overhand at the start to support the mill frame). Ended up getting 3.5 good full length slabs 50mm thick and a couple of cants. I then cut 2 bowl blanks from each of the two shorter pieces from the smaller log that looked very promising . The the rain started again just after we had packed up.
Ended up taking far longer then I intended , plus a lot wetter than I wanted , but the club got some good timber and I got a good workout .

Why people insist on knocking down immature cedars never ceases to amaze me.

Ooooh! Neil. Working in the rain. Don't let it be precedent. Otherwise others will insist on cutting their logs while the rain is falling. I hope they supplied you with a hearty lunch for your time and trouble
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

It had grown over/through the fence and damaging the next door's roof, from the branches and leaves. The owner didn't want to chop it down, he actually planted it 37 years ago, but had to.
This was a once off to help. Any future work will be charged, now I am retired with no income, can't afford to keep doing freebies.
No, but I was supposed to be finished before lunch, and the house owner wasn't a club member only a friend.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new
