    Thumbs up

    OGK.

Could be Blackwood- Acacia melanoxolyn . This is probably the most adaptable of the species
    in terms of habitat.

I remember a lazy afternoon helping out a mate with his film prop business, watching about 12 very large Pacific Islanders trying to get a slab table top up a set of stairs in a convent in Sydney. The slab was about 100mm thick, 1.200-1.800 wide and 4000-5000 long. On the flat they were OK, and even were going OK on the stairs - but then they hit the first landing and corner..........after about 15 minutes they got all their men out from in front, under and beside the slab as they just could not get it to go around the corner - it was a very large stair well, with clear space in the middle about twice the length of the slab in all directions, with a nice wide staircase but you just could not fit the slab and the men to carry it up the stairs and around the corners.

I don't know what they ended up doing as the last I saw of them when I packed up was a bunch of guys standing around head scratching with the slab half way around the first bend. I think they would have needed to set up temporary scaffolding at the top of the stair well then hoist it up with a good set of pulleys.

Philip, as Artme suggested, A.melanoxylon would be a good bet, if it's an Australian species. It has a very wide distribution here (southern Taswegia to north Qld.), and would doubtless find lots of Kiwiland to be a good place to live. However, there are many, many 'wattles' and their wood can look alike. What might be a good clue is that Blackwood is one of the few Acacias we have that produces anything you might refer to as a 'log'.

But before you rush out & order a container load of Blackwood, be aware that it is also probably one of the most variable of the Acacias in terms of the wood it makes. It can range from soft & pale, with the density of pine, to hard, brittle, stuff that chips out under the sharpest of tools. In between, it can produce beautiful, lustrous wood that is as nice to work as the best Walnut, and more attractive, with those deep, golden highlights. So what you need is a reliable supplier who can find the choice bits you need. You might also like to investigate some of the dry country Acacias, they can be even nicer than Blackwood, probably more stable, and no more difficult to work with.....

    Cheers,
    IW
