Milling timber cost
image.jpgHi, I have a retaining wall half completed, built from old railway sleepers. Before I run out and buy another 25 odd sleepers @ $30 a pop. I considered having a portable mill cut the logs I have on site. They have been down about 4 years, and I have a backho on site to move the logs around. Most logs are 500mm round. the sleepers I'd need are 2.4 long 230 x 100. Can you guys give an indication for a days work? I'm in the newcastle area thanks Jason NSW.image.jpg

Jason you are looking around $200-$250 per cubic metre of log to be sawn, or at the size you mentioned around about $24 - $29 each, not including if someone charges setup or travel fees, also not including any damage done to their gear if there is something foreign in the timber such as nails bullets screws stones etc.
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
Allan.

I don't know if this is any help to you.
I had some 50mmslabs split with a horizontal bandsaw locally about 2 years ago.
I had to take them to his yard. He charged me $70 per hour plus any blades that break.
I thought that was very reasonable pricing.

I'm in Maitland and have a Lucas Mill. Problem with those sizes you would need a 10" machine, as the max you can get in one pass of the common 8" model is around 205mm. It would not be worth double cuts from both sides as it takes way too long and you get a lot of waste (as you can't do a double cut when the frame gets too low to the ground). We charge per day as it depends on each and every tree how long it takes to cut...we have had good days where we have milled many logs, and other days where we only got through two logs as the species and tension in the log caused us a lot of drama. Daily rate I believe is fair as it includes set up, any log handling that needs to be done and if you help, you get more timber milled in the day. If you don't want to help...that is fine also.
