    Hi Eli,
    good on you for having a go. The answer is yes but, like anything, you need to comply with the relevant rules relating to the production and sale of the timber. There are quite a number of mistakes you can make that will get you into hot water.
    You should have a private property vegetation plan in place for the property that you are taking the timber from. (Unless you are taking it from your own property for your own use)
    In NSW sawmills are licenced. (not sure if this applies to lucas mills but I think it does).
    You need to comply with the rules for the production and grading of timber. (You need to become qualified in grading timber if selling it for structural use. Doing this course will also teach you the rules regarding how much sap is allowed on certain borer susceptible species and tolerances for sizing, allowable defects, stress and durability grades etc). This is not so important for cutting cabinet timbers like camphor but still handy to know.
    The other rules are those that relate to all businesses - the compliance with the various consumer laws, OH&S, RTA etc

    Sounds like a tough ask but your having a go and that's what it's all about. When it comes down to it all you have to do is find a buyer.

    regards
    Steve

    Eli, you can legally sell Spotty, in one of two ways;
    1. no sapwood is on any of the timber you go to sell
    2. sapwood can be on it, but it has to be treated prior to selling

    If you are wanting it for your own use, you can have as much sapwood on it as you feel you are happy with, but if down the track you go to sell a stick, it needs to comply with the above.

    A grading course will help you understand a lot and also help make you a better miller. Spotty is typically used for fence rails 4.8m long and either 100x38 or 75x38 'coz the longs are so straight and Long normally, but can be used very well for many other applications. I just cut a heap out at Yengarie for step treads, stringers, handrail and 125x38 fence rails 3.0m long. Finished off a job the other week using spotty to cut 125x50, 4.9m rafters for a chaps deck roof out at Tinana - he had bearers, joists, decking, rafters, pole plates, verandah beams and battens all cut from spotty.

    Let us know how you go.
    I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
    Allan.
