MS 660 Chain Lube, HOW MUCH??
HI All, still asking questions and thankfully receiving very helpful answers. Does anybody out there know how much bar oil my MS660 should be using, I am a tad suspicious that the delivery is low. Oil adjustment is set to Max, but after using a tank of fuel, I'm only using about 100ml of bar oil, seems awfully low to me seeing as my old 048 would use about 250ml per smaller tank of fuel. Much appreciated if anyone can help, maybe another 660 owner can tell me how much theirs uses.
Cheers

Mine is set on max permanently and I fill it when I top up the fuel, but it generally needs it.

The 660 oil pump delivers between 10 and 21 mL/min and has a 350 mL oil tanks. You can work it out from there.
Even on max the oil never seems to run out when the oil delivery is set on max .

Les when i purchased mine (secondhand) i took it to a Stihl dealer (mate) to get it checked, he found the drive for the oil pump (behind the sprocket) was broken - hence the reason for the "blue" bar.
Might be worth checking - mine uses almost a full tank of oil to fuel
Cheersregards

What setting have you got the oil pump at? If you have it set at minimum it might only use 100 mL per tank full of fuel.

This is in a way an inbuilt failsafe bob it is done intentionally so thatyou will run out of fuel before the oil runs out. At maximum using proper bar oil you should be left with approx 8 to 10% of a tank of oil left. double check your setting of the screw make sure it just isn't at a sticky spot and if it isn't get your pump checked out by the dealer.if you are only using approx 100 ml something IS wrong and you will be doing damage to the chain, Bar and most importantly the power head. also pull the bar off the saw and make sure that the oiler hole is not blocked or obstructed in any way both on the bar and on the saw

If we assume there is 10% of the oil left, the amount of oil used up at max (21 mL/min) should be 315 ml or 15 mins of flat out cutting.
At 10 mL/min the oiler will only use 150 mL over the same 15 minute period.
As you say, it sounds like the adjustment screw or pump might just be stuck on the low setting or if not those other things you said.

No blockages
Definetly no blockages on saw or oiler hole on bar, I am most meticulous about that side of it. Agree that if I am only using that much oil then I'm most likely to damage something. Adjustment screw does not turn very far from min to max, maybe 45deg at most. Does that add up to everyone elses saw?
Going to do another slab today and measure oil usage as accurately as possible. So far local dealer has been less than helpful and has been unable to come up with a definite figure for oil usage even though BobL seemed to know these figures off the top of his head.
If I get the same results tody then the saw is going back under warranty.
Cheers

45º is about right.

Have you had the clutch drum off recently? If so check if the clutch housing is sitting properly, if it's not it will not drive the oil pump properly - if that is the case chances are by now the drive gear is stripped (OUCH) - just a thought.
The other thing it could be is the oil vent valve. if that is blocked it makes it harder for the pump to pump oil.

maybe pull your oil hose out of the tank and see if filter is blocked. Also what oil are you using? May be too thick if so try thinner oil for a tank full and see how it goes.
