    Default Neighbours Tallowood

The chap next door is putting down a few trees after just moving into the place...he has heard the chainsaw goin while I've been ripping posts and I daresay the mill has been heard a few times too

He mentioned this Tallow coming down and asked if any of it would be of interest to me as he was just thinking he would take it to the dump once down.

That was a few weeks ago, well he pops over one evening last week, to let me know they got the tree down, worked out great as I had brought Bob the cat home that day and the next day I only needed to be meeting a chap at midday to go over some timber pricing for https://www.woodworkforums.com/f132/l...7/#post1627476 So it meant I had a bit of free time and bob at home to help out...

I get over there and this is the tree....

I went through with Sammy my trusty 395xp, docked off what seemed to be usable billets and went about extracting them from the 'tree' (this chap mows his lawn almost every other day, so I was very, very careful not to tear up his grass, which made turning bob a 30metre event!!!) Here's the billets I managed to sneak out

The butt of the tree forked really early, about 3 foot high, but having said this both billets from the base of the tree gave bob a little challenge. One worked out just on 1,200kg, the other Bob did ok with and was about 900kg. This second one, I was able to pick up and load on the trailer normally, but the first billet proved to be stubborn and I ended up needing to put one end up first behind a bolster then go lift the other end up onto the trailer.

This is a pic of both butt logs back home with me standing on top of the 900kg one, the 1200kg one underneath - reckon Bob earned his pay for me...

(Thread already taken over half an hour so far...gonna copy all of it, before trying to post - fingers crossed)

Woot woot - first section worked and only half an hour....

It took two trailer loads to remove it from his back yard - admittedly I think the trailer was overloaded for some of these trips, but only the first and second

I got it back to my place and sorted into the order I wanted the logs and things I wanted to mill from them, also rolled the first log 'in' before completing the mill setup - bit easier as this first log was a bit bent with one fat end and much easier to put that kind of log in without the nearside rail to have to negotiate around with the hook and bar...

After Maplemans https://www.woodworkforums.com/f132/m...tallow-168041/ I wanted to show some of the figure from these guys too, but time of day and using phone camera didn't do it as much justice, but I reckon you guys will get the idea...

I had an order for a bunch of 3m sleepers from a chap who I sliced a silky oak in his front yard at Coolum Beach about 18 months ago, so the first 3 logs where set aside for his order. After only getting 9 sleepers from the first log, I was thinking I might have had to crack a fourth log for the order, but the second log came through with the goods and managed to complete the order in only the two butt logs...

    The order on the trailer...

The waste left from slicing the first two logs...

With everything going so well, I even managed to sneak in an arvo fishing session after the delivery...

Hi Al, the first two pics in the first post had me thinking that the tree was all branches and was not gonna be worth the effort, but by the looks there was some usable stuff there

Al, you don't think it was a bit too ah (cough) nice for sleepers? Good job on the waste - very efficient. Good yarn too.

Glad to see it all put to good use rather than just taken to the tip

Yeah, Pete, I was lucky enough to see it standing a few weeks earlier so I knew there was a bit of timber in it's butt, having said this I didn't realise I would be able to pull as much out of it - neighbour was also surprised i pulled out as much as I did so he was really happy to have a "lot less" to take to the dump

I AGREE, way to good for sleepers, all but 5-6 would have been prime candidates for F22 joist/bearer material

    Default The 4 inch. T/Wood.

    Hi Allan,
Thanks for the thought, but I live In Geelong, Vic.
You can make a lot of Stuff from those Branches, as that was all I usually ever used.
But my work has slowed up quite a bit now, & at this time I'm having a clean out, & will most likely have to resharpen the B/Saw Blade again.
    Regards,
    issatree.
