the good oil
Some oil prices.....all expressed per litre, based on 4-5litre packs, so would be cheaper in bulk.
Gulf Western 4 stroke motor oil (sae 15W/40) - $3.40
Stihl bar oil - $8.50
Gulf Western bar oil - $4.50
Gear oil (sae 80W/90) - $8.25
oil stabiliser to increase tackiness is $16/litre, and recommended to be added at about 25% of oil. This could be added to the cheap motor oil, but then price is comparable to Stihl bar oil and gear oil. The item of interest is the Gulf Western bar oil at $4.50. This is available from our local supercheap auto, and significantly cheaper than Stihl oil. I'm trying this out now.

A couple of things come to mind (and remember - I like simple).
If you are only using your chainsaw a couple of times a year then I cant see any reason that you can't afford a litre or so of bar oil every couple of years.
If as most on this thread you are using an expensive chainsaw most weekends of the year - can you afford not to be using bar oil?

Petree, I only went into supa cheap auto, where the tackifier is called oil stabiliser. If you do add it to f&c oil, please take note of the amount you need to add to get an effect. Just put some oil between thumb and forefinger and seperate them to look for strings of tacky oil. Compare with brand bar oil, and let us know. Ken
