just for reference
This is all very helpful. This table seems to agree with your figures in the 70-75 m/s range when the motor rpm is 3600. mistakes?

Swing Saw blade tip speed
pkbx,
Good luck with your swing saw project. I designed and built a 5 tooth 550 dia. swing blade saw 15+ years ago. It is still going well.
I used a Honda 18 hp motor (GX610) with a centrifugal clutch with V belt (3SPA) drive, 125:160 ratio, through a 1:1 gearbox.
Assuming the motor runs at 2750 rpm (max torque) this gives a blade rpm of 2578. Therefore the tip speed is 61.8 m/s.
At max motor speed of 3300 rpm the tip speed will be 74 m/s.
I think that even these conservative speeds may be a little high for some of our very hard timbers like dry grey gum.
Judging from all the figures given in other replies, my numbers were somewhere close to the mark.
Regards.

depends on wich lucas saw the 6inch is faster hence it slabs better. 10 & 8 inch would be differing speeds as well. i think the rpm is goverened by the diameter not the nmber of teeth . as my band saw runs the same speed regardless of how many theeth per inch , as the wheels govern the speed . hope this was helpfull cheers

PKBX, sorry it has taken me a lot longer than I anticipated in putting this pic up.
Blame Burnsy.... Mike has a lot to answer for regarding the cr@p fight he's dropped me into
Anyway here's the pic I was talking about posting for you, not sure how well it will come out...
Oh ok, on preview it came up a lot better than I expected.I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
Allan.

I checked the RPM on the Bench saw today, 950RPM direct drive to a 32" blade

FunkyC,
That is a 6 pole 3 phase motor, nominal speed 950 rpm, direct driven blade because that is simplest. The tip speed of that blade will be 40.4 m/s. Is it a tipped blade? The other more experienced forum members could tell us for sure, but I think the tipped blades could run with a higher tip speed than the conventional spring (alloy) steel blades.
I have a couple of inserted teeth (stellite) blades ex "Forestmill" and I have been thinking about setting one of them up on a bench. Another project!
