pentofilan Peltophorum Pterocarpum
I first started this back in Oct last year https://www.woodworkforums.com/f14/pentofilan-159915/ I finally got back to it, after digging around the base and chopping off the roots it finally fell over, bit of effort involved but Mapleman inspired me with his mango stump although not as big

I trimmed the branches back to the fork trunk then took the two small forks off, a lot of pressure washing and more root trimming (and saw chain sharpening) I still managed to hit a few pockets of dirt
I decided to cut the main log section right thru the middle due to there being what looked like a big hole up the guts, and it was

I ended up with two of these about 190mm thick which I'll further process on the bandsaw/sled
I then prepare the fork pieces ready for the bandsaw to slice into veneers, it's not what I was expecting but pretty good anyways

WOW Pete!!! What a treasure!!!
Could you give us a few pics of your set up? I am assuming you have an Alaskan Mill for the chainsaw but I would loke to see your sled on the bandsaw. (Nosey bugger aren't I)
Also can you let us know what treatment you use to create and use the veneers?
I have a number of short logs, around 1500 long, in Camphor Laurel and Silky Oak that have been waiting about a year to slice up. I have started but get interrupted by other dutiesJust do it!
Kind regards Rod

DJ is on the ball
I have modified the BS fence again since that thread, much simpler now https://www.woodworkforums.com/f27/fence-mods-113240/
I see I didn't get back to it either
The movable wheel "possibly" finishes the fence
cloesup simpler roller mount.jpgsideview simple roller mount.jpg
The roller effectively is a taller fence that I can move along the fence, in use tho I position it inline with the blade, I'll probably make up some longer ones down the track.
Since that thread I have also added some outfeed rollers that I can set 50mm high for sled cutting and low for non sled cutting, this makes the full width rollers somewhat redundant "at the moment", the ptfe? (plastic) roller is one of three picked up from the bin and the four rubber wheels are from the tip shop, previously in inline skates I think.

This is another thread with a few more pics of sled https://www.woodworkforums.com/f132/s...n-plum-161494/
and this is a utube vid of me cutting some veneers cutting veneers on bandsaw0001 - YouTube
and the table the veneers ended up on

I have added an aux oiler since that thread and two wheels

Who can spot the mistake....ahhh umm creative engineering?
And the wheels

I was gonna cut it off close to ground level but your efforts did inspire, lot of work tho
Once it dries I reckon it will be in the medium to hard sort of area, I base that on the bits that have been cut for a time which seemed to be quite hard, a lot denser than raintree and when I try and break a piece, it hangs on with lots of long fibres so should be ok

Pete, the only problem now is stopping the Lyctus borers attacking the sapwood, they LOVE those trees,
Also, how do you keep the Aux Oiler in the bar, its not real clear in the photo?

The borers are a pain, I have some nasty stuff but a bit loath to use it, maybe go down the borax (or is it boron?) road and see how that goes, I'll have to do some reading.
I have a bit of a question/query that the collective might have ideas on, with this Pentofilan and another that comes to mind is Camphour Laurel, the line where there is a definate change in colour would seem to indicate heartwood and then sapwood but, Is this the case in these timbers? Is there heart wood that is still yet to turn dark (not sapwood) and then sapwood that is indistinct from the heartwood that is yet to change colour out to the bark, certainly lots of timbers have a distinct colour change and is unmistakeable, some say like Huon the sapwood is yellowish like the true wood but not quite the same as the true wood, Anybody got any thoughts?
With the oiler I set the brass fitting so it just pokes into the hole in the bar, I probably lose a bit of oil off to the side due to it not having any sort of good seal but it was the best I could do with what I had, I was thinking maybe an o ring or some sealant but then for what it is doing I thought that will do, as long as the hole doesn't clog up with sawdust it works fine and if it does clog it only takes a little while to clear and all is good. It was one of those suck and see what happens

Thanks for that Pete. I had a better look at the photos, and I can work it out now, my aux oiler is only 3mm in dia, and sometines the vibration breaks the brass fitting off, so I will find someone that can enlarge the hole in the titanium bar and go bigger.
As to your question on the deliniation between sap and heart woods, its not clear on these trees, so as a matter of course, I saw all what looks like sapwood off, and only keep the good stuff, as its usually free. Unless you treat it, they will leave their little holes behind to give you a true indication where the line is.

Crocy.

That table is superb. Wonderful use of figure and creative legs -- all works really well together.
