Default Plans for building a horizontal bandsaw mill.

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone new where it was possible to get suitable plans for DIY building a bandsaw mill with about 800 mm slab capacity. I have just acquired quite a few cubic metres of "hairy oak" or flame she-oak, and I would like to be able to slice it up myself so that I can control what I recover.

Can't help with the bandsaw plans, but Hairy Oak would be one of the few timbers I would definitely consider TCT blades, to handle all the dirt/silica/hardness of the timber. Gorgeous stuff, good luck with it, probably plenty of turners/box makers etc interested in the timber.

Thanks for the reply, dai sensei, yes I would agree with you on the TCT blades. It is a very similar timber to budgeroo in it's affect on blades, and also grows in the same sort of really poor country. I have a friend who makes jewelry boxes, who has put her hand up for slices 8-10 mm thick, but she only needs 100-150 mm wide slices, so pretty easy to get. The pieces I don't know how to market will come out of some of the really large trees that I have found around 800 mm through the trunk. I believe it is quite rare to get such big trees in this day and age.

I am one of the lucky ones, apart from a lot of smaller logs, I got this trunk of Hairy (originally dia ~500mm max x ~3m long). The faults at the end only went in 100mm and next 500mm (all I have cut) was basically solid

That is still a significantly sized hairy oak. Did you buy it as is from someone, or did you go out and find it yourself?

I bought both the Hairy Oak and Budgeroo logs from the same bloke at the WWW show in Brisbane. Helping out on the stands meant I could get in early to the supplier and get the best offers. I got the Hairy at the show and needed a big crane to lift it. The Budgeroo log was in a paddock on the Gold Coast and too big to move so I milled it where it was

A 800mm Cut will require a 20+Hp Motor, I have built a BSM using Space saver Spares as the Band wheels powered by a 13hp Chonda (Chinese Honda). My max cut is 600mm, I have a basic set of Plans if you would like them. PM me and I will get them to you.

Hi if you go to wood.ca web site you will find plans there for a bandsaw mill and many other woodworking machines.
