Portable Millers Victoria?
Hi
We have property in Tallarook in Victoria and will soon be owner builders. I was looking at the cost of a portable mill but they look to be rather expensive so I was interested in finding someone who offers a portable milling service.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any idea what the cost of these services are?
Thanks
Alissa

Alissa, g'day!!
Most portable millers I've heard of charge around the $200 per cubic metre of log, some vary a few $'s above and below, some do it hourly, but it works out around that mark. This means the sawn timber on the ground ends up costing around $500 per cubic metre or say a 6x2 is about $3.75 per metre.
If you're doing a house and you think you'll be done in two years - I'd advise getting yourself a 6-18 from Lucas, I've got one and have used it for the house and for work. It can cut every stick you will need for a house and much more (Even now at 80% complete I can't believe how much timber is in the house )
At the end of the build you can sell the Lucas for a very small loss of maybe 20% of your purchase price (this is based on seeing what prices people are buying second hand Lucas Mills for) then say you've cut yourself 20 cubic metres of timber to use in the house (which we've done almost 4 times over!!) this would cost around $10,000 for a mobile guy from your logs, more if they have to supply logs for the timber. If you've bought the mill, cut your 20 cube, then sold the mill it's cost you around $2-3,000
Alissa, PM me if you have q's or want to chat numbers.
Everyone here knows I am very pro Lucas, but I'm not an agent for them, I just love my Lucas and I like telling people about good thingsI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
Allan.

that is of course if you have the knowledge and desire to cut your own timber . its not as easy as some would say ,logs being heavy etc etc , but is a lot of fun ,
