If you think that logs float away you have been watching too many American movies.

Simple maths. Take the weight of water per cubic meter and take the weight of the log per cubic meter off that. If the total is negitive then the log will sink. The majority of Aussie hardwoods will sink, the majority of cedar and pine will float(typically northern hemishpere timbers).

When your engine starts you can thank the engine manufacture and the person cleaning the engine out. Does not matter what engine you have if they are all cleaned properly they should work first time.

Salt water would be different. engine and ally mill would be stuffed if left any length of time.

Even if they don't float, whether they are still there depends on the speed of flow.
A one tone log with a density of 1.1 tones/cubm has a weight in water of 100 kg. In a decent water flow the log can still be moved underwater if there is nothing to stop them rolling along and I've seen aussie logs that have been move for some kms. However, in your case Sidgi a creek rise and fall is usually low water flow and they should still be there.

Don't know where you stand on that one, just wanted to draw your attention to the starter motor on your Lucas motor (if there is one). When a big outboard motor goes under, the starter motor needs to be fully pulled apart and dried too. Commiserations from Coffs Harbour - we got half a meter of rain in a couple of days, didn't damage milling gear, but nearly lost the driveway.

I've got 1050kg per cube in my head for bluegum, will have to look it up to make sure, but like Bob said, that makes a 1 cube log 50kg!! or a 1.5 cube log 75 kg, that begins to be a bit too light for my liking, especially sitting next to the mill before the water

Oh and the mill is pull start, but the cord is broken, just put a new battery in about 2 months ago...

Have you thought about water cooling the bar for slabbing?

I reckon worrying about the logs and calculating the weight is probably a waste of time, when the water goes down the logs will either be there or gone somewhere else.

Not much you can do about that now or then so better to open another stubby and watch the water run past.

You could also pray for some of it to come down to Victoria - we like rain here as well you know.

As for the motor well clean it out and it will be fine, once it gets hot it will dry it properly and in a couple of months you wont know it was ever under water.

    Cheers
    regards

    David

Hey Sigidi, hope all's well with your mill. The only consolation I can think of is that at least it's raining up there. We've only had a bit over an inch for the year.
