    Default Resawing

A friend of my wife has about 15 laminated pine beams that are 200mm wide and 140 mm deep. They vary between about 3.5 M and 5.5 M long.

He is tossing up between buying a half decent bandsaw and resawing them himself and getting someone in to rip them down into about 90-100 mm and 40-50 mm thick sections. If any of you are interested in doing this work are you able to provide a guesstimate of the cost involved. The timber is at Narangba.

With respect, John, buying a half decent bandsaw just to resaw 15 flitches seems like a crazy idea - unless he plans to keep the bandsaw in your shed.... By the times he learns how to use it, those planks will be match sticks!

A local joinery shop or men's shed should be able to handle this far cheaper than a bandsaw. Most are extremely wary of pre-finished wood, or dirty woods - grit does nasty things to blades.

    Good luck.

    Thanks, Graeme.

Sounds like good advice to me.

I offered to cut them on my bandsaw, if they'd cart them to my workshop. However, the two guys involved were keen to try to get a bandsaw and to do it themselves. Both men are Chinese immigrants with minimal English, so my major role is that of an English speaking mouthpiece.

I'm hoping all they need is a dose of reality ... like the cost of a bandsaw and the cost of getting the sections professionally cut. That just might send them scampering over to my place or to a men's shed with their timber. As you suggested, I have written an email to their local men's shed to see if they can get it done there.

Resawing laminated pine beams back into 2x4's? I do plenty of resawing on my bandsaw, but for the price of dimensional lumber already coming in at the correct dimensions, no thanks.

Show them the price of a Rikon 14" bandsaw and let them decide.
