    I'd say it's a sequoia. Somewhere I have a book on the history of Northwest Pacific Timber - I think that photo is also in that book.

    No idea on the original source sorry. I stumbled across it this morning on reddit: the front page of the internet (my favourite time wasting site).

    While I was out cutting today I couldn't remember how long the saw was and was thinking that near the middle they could have been punching the tree if they weren't careful. Now that I've had another look, it still looks like it would have been shortish strokes, but it's an amazingly good looking cut. And unless it's a perfectly straight tree and the photo was taken dead on centre, I think it might just be a disc/log...so the mad buggers did it more than once (as in DavidG's link)
