Thread: Rosewood log

Hi Stopper,
What a fantastic log my favorite timber by far so consistent in structure beautiful to turn just spin it and lean on in with the chisel cuts so easy and smooth, and the grain pattern that come from rosewood in boards can be incredible and the fragrance sorry am I drooling. Congratulations on such a wonderful piece.

Is that the last decent sized Rosewood log left in the country??

Some gorgeous timbers have come from the Dorrigo area - Rosewood, Tallowood, Dorrigo Waratah.

Dad and his brothers cut timber up that way in the late 40s and early fifties. Uncle Ces lived at Dundurrabin for a while.

Thanks for this post. Of all the Aussie timbers, Rosewood is probably my favourite as not only does it have beautiful grain it is such a pleasure to work with. I am sure you will put this to good use!

Quite a reasonable sized rosewood log.

oooo I'd love some pieces from that gnarly butt (said the actress to the bishop!). I once made a box from rosewood salvaged from a butt like that one and everyone thought it was made from leather!

I spoke to the owner of the log today and he's agreed to sell some of the timber to interested forum members. If you'd like his contact details send me a PM. He's a local cabinet maker that will make the most of the log but he agrees it'll be a decade or 2 before he could use it all.

Total log volume was over 22 cubic metres. Diameter of the butt log 1500mm. Diameter at the top was still over 1m. I had to cut 2.1m off the butt to clean it up. The next two log lengths were slabbed down to faults then 6x6 and 4x4s cut around the heart. Pictured piece is 6.2m long and too heavy for my loader (over 6t) so I had to rip it down the centre. Slabs were taken off both sides then 450mm wide boards cut from the centre billet.

Was going to post this on a seperate thread and see if anyone else had a favourite tree, be it dead or still standing, but seeing we are on the subject of my favourite timber(hence the user-name) thought i might share this with everyone.
This big Rosie grows not far from me and at head height, he is 9.7 mts around the butt. Pretty impressive billet.IMG_4541.jpg

Very impressive may she grow long and straight for many years yet .............here's hoping she also spreads her seed to grow many more for future lovers of Rosewood such as myself.
