Large Sassafrass just dropped
Hi all, I'm new to this so if I'm not in the right spot please let me know.
I've just dropped a large Sassafrass tree and after information on what's the best thing to do with it. The tree is straight and I haven't cut the main trunk up yet, only removed branches to clean up yard. It's just over 12 m long, around 450mm diameter at base and tapering to around 250mm diameter at 7.5 m and around 125-150mm at end (12 m).
Does anyone have any suggestions on what's the best thing to do with it.
We live on a few acres in the Dandenong Ranges (about 40 km east of Melbourne) and have been progressively cleaning up the property. I have plenty of room to mill it, but not the tools or any idea of what that entails or how to care for it. I do have a single garage that it could be stored in, but that's about it.
We have lots of other large trees on the block that keep getting knocked over in storms, including Blackwoods, and to date I've only been cutting them up for firewood.
I believe they must have better value than that. Cheers

If you go to the Lucas Mills website they have a directory of portable saw millers, not that owning a sawmill makes someone a sawmiller but it's a place to start.
Logs that size in those species are worth ballpark $50 to $80 a cubic meter on the stump. The sassafras based on your numbers is around 0.72 cubic meters: anything under 250 mm diameter under bark is pretty much worthless to mill but good for firewood or turning blanks; given the price of firewood probably better to use it to stay warm at night.

Hello
I reckon some pictures here would really help. I know I got excited when I saw the subject post.
Cheers

Look up Premier timber Milling in Wesburn. Colin is very reasonably priced and will provide a pickup service (which you have to pay for)
