Exclamation Sawmills affected by 2009 VIC bushfires

    Hi everyone,

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I apologise in advance if you see this pop up in a few different threads.

My name is Sally and I'm a journalism student from Monash University. I'm writing a story about the effects that the 2009 bushfires had, and are continuing to have, on the Victorian timber industry. I've come to the Woodwork Forums because I'm interested in speaking to a few sawmill operators about their experiences of the event and how it has impacted on their operations.

I have attempted to contact HVP Plantations and the CMFEU Forestry and Furnishing Products Division, and will keep trying, but have so far not been able to get across to anybody who could help.

If you or somebody you know would be interested in sharing their story, please reply or send me an email at [email protected] .

Hope to hear from somebody soon, thanks and regards.

Basically aside from the few that got burnt down, like around Narbethong, The way I understand it is that the mills have never been busier!! Due to the time frame of how long they have to cut all of the fire damaged log before it becomes unuseable, they are flat out with recovering as much salvage log as possible. With the approximately 1.8 million hectares burnt in 2007 and then again with the black saturday, There is plenty of wood out there to be cut.

Also you could try the DPI, the DSE and contact some of the mills themselves such as the ones in launching place, warburton, and powelltown, these would be where I would start.
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.
