Serendipity from Lucas HQ
A fella rang me saying he was given my number from Lucas HQ, when he rang them asking who had a 10" as he was a Lucas mill owner, but had taken an order for timber among which was a bunch of 10" beams... that had to be cut and delivered by end of week. He assured me the logs would be ready onsite in the morning when I got there.
So I worked a big day and delivered late in the afternoon to clear a day so I could free a day up to cut his beams. I was set to get there nice and early to make sure I got his stuff cut... when I get a txt as I'm walking out the door at 0530 "can you bring your bobcat?" DanG!!!! not much of a problem, except Bob was spending the day at the dump and its gates are opened at 0700.
I roll up to the dump, wait for the gates to open, load bob then head off up the coast an hours drive. I get onsite unload everything and luckily am greeted by this...

so something was going right.
First log loaded up and shaking in its boots

After slicing off the first 10x2 beam, its not the only thing that is going right for the day, these logs are great, hardly any tension at all
WP_001108.jpg
And slicing a thin bit of sapwood proves it - virtually no movement, loving it
WP_001109.jpg
Days end, all the beams cut and a bit of waste shifted...

Packed up and headed off home, happy customer and happy sawmiller, this brings my total of other Lucas owners I've cut for to 6 and another Peterson owner - thanks for the name drop LucasI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Its a great sense of satisfaction when you get to turn nice logs like that into very nice timber.
Alan, what species of euc. were they?
cheers,

Isn't it a good feeling when you can just carve up log after log and they don't turn themselves into bananas?
Nice fresh logs Allan? I'm getting that way that I just about want to fell and mill on the same day with some eucalypts... or at least in the same week: I seem to get straighter timber that way without having to bench so much of it to resaw. The stand I've been in the last few months seems to be "dry"... and I suspect I'm getting a steep moisture gradient between heartwood and sapwood if I let them lie on the ground too long and they will pull to the sap big time if left moren a week. I'm also getting anal about applying end sealer to the logs immediately after felling... same again I think, not loosing so much free water so the sap doesnt dry so fast.
I've traditionally considered rose gum one of the better timbers to saw but... those look to be laying straight (for that kind of length) even for rose gum.
Just curious is all.

Flooded Gum and Rose Gum are one and the same. I have to put in the qualification that often local names are given to various timbers. However, if you look up E.Grandis it will list both common names.
It is a versatile timber good for furniture making (cut 150mm x 25mm boards) and also is used for construction, flooring, panelling and boat building.
I'm surprised no one wants it. Don't let anybody chip it!

it is a nice even grained timber, would work well with hand tools.
On a side note, bit of an update, the order was to be delivered Friday and then old mate could pay me. Last night I hadn't had a call all day so on way home was going to ring him, but at 1935 he rang me - ordered wasn't delivered (log damaged his tractor) so am waiting for a call today maybe....I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Ahhh... the old can't pay you, till I get paid routine. Not for this little black duck.
Hope it all works out for you, be a shame to have to go back and take a chainsaw to all that beautiful timber
One of my favourites, good job mate.

Well, text messages, phone calls, answer machine messages today and no contact with him until past 2020hrs and.... no delivery of the timber today, so yep still no pay.
Turns out, the order that HAD to be done for Friday, (so I dropped everything and shuffled stuff around) and he still hasn't finished cutting his part of it.
Apparently he has "a fella coming in tomorrow" (Sunday) to help get the order out..... So I'm waiting for a call again tomorrow.
I think I will ring him in the morning and offer to deliver my part of the order so there is no further excuses, if I get any other excuses, I'll arrive at the timber with a freshly fueled and sharpened 395XP, I cut an extra length above the order requirements and I'll start slicing it into bits....
I just ing hate not getting paidI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

I hope you get your cash mate. .. That must feel awful. .. On a side note you've got me thinking about markets for my Flooded gum, given I can't afford a lucas yet does it mill alright with a chainsaw mill? I'm guessing it would as it's much softer than the rest of the eucs we have here.

It'd mill pretty nice with a chainsaw mill, nice and even grained and not very dense, reckon it would go great - give it a go
