    Default Shifting house

Most woodies will get this: we accumulate "stuff". Logs, timber, equipment, tools, spare parts, useful bits and pieces and bits and pieces that might be useful someday... the accumulated junk that's too good to throw out, and the junk that we probably should throw out but never quite get to.

And we all know the rule... The week after we do toss something out we'll need it and have to buy something else. Wives and S.O.'s learn to leave our junk alone so long as it's out of sight in the shed, they know that anything borrowed from the shed returns to the shed. A mans shed is his castle, and woe unto anyone who messes with the shed or the contents thereof.

And moving becomes more more then the moving headache of mere mortals. For not only do we need to find a new shed, but we got to shift the contents of the old shed to the new shed. Logs, timber, equipment, tools, spares, bits and pieces... It's a nightmare.

Two months ago we were given notice about having to leave "my" shed, which was obviously not mine but merely leased. So for those of you who've had to do this, I now understand what you've had to go through. I sympathize, commiserate, we share a bond that others do not.

For those who've never been shedless or had to uproot from that which we hold dear...I look at you with envy.

And to all of you I say "Be thankful, for your shed can't have been as bad as mine."

    Pics to follow.

The cyclone, and one blower (different truck loads obviously). Not to mention 42 meters of 8" ducting, sundry elbows, junctions, headstocks, spiders, spill pipes, slide pieces etc etc.

Spec's on the blower for BobL who loves these kinda toys... 8" pipe, 10 HP 3 phase motor, suction... lots and lots. Noise level - ever heard a 747 on startup? God help the new neighbours.

John, I do sympathize with you. When dad passed away he left me the remains of his lifelong business and I was slowly moving to my place, but was limited for room. After a few years mum snapped and gave me 3 weeks to get everything out. Well 10 years on I still have machines and timber under tarps, what a PITA to get to use them.
    Best of luck,
    Crocy.
P.S. I have not forgotton to do your pepper grinders, but I have been out of action for a month now. I will starta new thread in Health Issues soon.

Some boards... what was left after I'd discounted 10 cube more or less of H3 framing out the door and sent another 60 ... yup, thats two B Doubles full... off to treatment with instructions not to send it back till I'm ready for it. Fortunately my treatment guy has plenty of yard space

I'm sure I'm not the only one that during a shed cleanout finds bits and pieces of wood they'd forgotten they had, but I suspect most of you don't find whole packs of them.

I heard a rumour that you were being forced to move. Not good to hear. Like Crocy I sympathize with you as I had to move everything from Cairns to Townsville many years ago now. My shift involved having to put everything into storage at my Dad's place for over twelve months so it was really two shifts, but was pretty basic compared to what you are having to go through. Hope it all settles down fast so you can back to earning an income.

Sorry to hear that mate. No rush on the grinders - I just wanted some feedback on those species for turning and we're going to be offline a bit longer yet anyway.

Yah, I got a storage headache till this is done for sure. Bloody nightmare - but a cautionary tale for woodies and little sawmillers over what can happen if you let the sawdust disease get you seriously. We were just about fully back on line when the faeces hit the rotary blades for the first time since Yasi too.

Mate this is my worst f*@!ing nightmare come true. I've got 300 ton of logs banked up in the bush because we had to get them on the ground before the end of the financial year in two different blocks (I'd spent a heap of time bringing the #1 back on line since Christmas)... the hardwood will hold over a bit but the rainforest stuff needs processing... and I'm still got nothing better to go to then a rough bush shed suit Lucas Mill.

Some gear out the dry side of the mill...
    Barker #2 bench, 450mm wheel, 15HP motor.
White #3 bench (sliding table type), I think its about a 300mm wheel but anyway, it'll handle 4" in the cut, 6HP motor.
The little thicknesser - someone asked about one of them here a while back but its a fixed bed with rise and fall on the head... copy of a REX Timbermaster 450 ex Taiwan.
Little dust extractor for the thickky/3 bench...because they used to get shifted around depending on where I needed them.
One of the radial arm dockers, plus fixed benches to suit, and a whole heap of sawhorses for piling stuff on.

What Ive been able to arrange is (a) storage for the gear (b) a shed about the size of a shoe box for storing sawn timber (c) shed space for plant and (d) a cow paddock for log dump and Lucas mill. Sadly none of the above are together and it's going to be a major PITA to achieve anything until we can get it all back under one roof.

its hard to find the mix of yard space / shed / serious 3 phase electrickery I need to operate properly, and being so wet it's hard to cut corners on hard stand or roof space. If I can find the right yard / roof combo then I can install a big genset for juice if necessary... hopefully just for startup loading or "everything turned on at once loading" then fall back on mains power for running.

We might just have to hang tough for a bit then buy the place we were leasing... it's one of the options under consideration anyway, it was falling apart but it had good power.

Today was the big thicknesser, and half a load of timber. She's a big old Klein foursider- think vintage Wadkin built with Germanic precision - opens to 630 x 150, weighs about... well, we had to chain the back of the 2t forklift to the drawbar of a tractor to hold it down when we lifted it, and then we backed the truck in underneath. Either bush ingenuity or stupidity... and mostly stupidity because I shoulda thought to send it before the log loader was floated out. 5.5HP motors on the sides and 7.5's top and bottom and a big old mechanical infeed system with about 5 gears. They don' t build them like that anymore.

And another load of timber racks. That been the worst part: unloading all the racks into packs and not being able to just put a hand on a board when someone rings up anymore. 6 truckloads of assorted racking so far... and somewhere sometime in the future we'll get to load them all up again.

    John,
I have a mate in Cairns who has recently sold his business and is going into retirement. He has a 20m x 20m shed on a 2acre block with plenty of outside storage and 3ph power. Last time I spoke to him he was planning on keeping the property and renting it out as a retirement income source.
If it is of any use to you, let me know and I will try to get in touch with him as he is away holidaying at present.

Thanks Ken. I'll kick you a PM tomorrow after I've had a bit of a sleep and can think straight.
