Why not Bruce, come and drink some booze with the rest of us! get to see some real saws and sawyers in action, gonna be guys from all over oz there! everything from guys who hang out of trees on ropes with saws in their hands to guys who mill big wood!
Glad you would love to catch up with me!I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

Yes Alan, my kit came with one chain, a five skip. I need to order a 3 skip.
Chris is at large. Here is a picture of him at my mill. Yes, that free chains saw looks too new.
We ran both mills, I was fortunate to see the Lucas setup, including the slabber. Many of the way thing on done are similar, and I found small adjustments that will help me in my setup.
That 10" cut is awesome! It really changes things going from 8" to 10". Yes, we all like our mills but that mill should be give a reward.

Hey Travis and Bruce, I'd be inclined to fly down if/when I decide to come - depends a lot on what work I have etc. but wouldn't drive, fuel cost for the trip would be more than the airfare and would need an extra few days off work to drive, plus wouldn't be anywhere near as comfy doin the drive in The Mutt - Although could have my swag in the back...
SG, good to see Chris is over there making some sawdust, good on himI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

So I made a couple of adjustments to the slabber today...
First one was, I feel the amount of oil going onto the chain needs to be better 'delivered' I did this with my last slabber and thought I'd do it again to this one. If you look closely between the pics you can see how much I increased the size of the oil groove so that the oil is delivered right onto the drive teeth of the chain as it runs...
Turns out havin issues with uploading my pics - will try do them laterI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Well funny thing that, I got the chance to give the slabber a little run Friday last week, only did two cuts to check things where good for todays cut job. First cut was to level the face of the existing log up, second cut was to release a slab. Straight out the box 48mm at one end of the slab and 48mm at the other end - pretty bloody close to perfect if you ask me.
The adjustments I've done are things I think I can make better, but have no idea if the actually will or not, I just reckon they might, (plus I've got a new welder so needed an excuse to put it to use ) but I'll post pics later tonight if not still havin issuesI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

I will pick ya up in melbourne if ya need Al or get one of the guys coming through to grab ya when they pick up the others from the airport!
so the ends measure 48 mm but what was the middle?I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

So I made a couple of adjustments to the slabber today...
First one was, I feel the amount of oil going onto the chain needs to be better 'delivered' I did this with my last slabber and thought I'd do it again to this one. If you look closely between the pics you can see how much I increased the length of the oil groove so that the oil is delivered right onto the drive teeth of the chain as it runs...
The next thing I wanted to do was hold the plastic pipe a bit better, especially with it coming off a spool, the pipe is curved and doesn't seem to want to stay over the oil groove nicely and the last thing I wanna do is be slabbing and have little to no oil on the drive links, you can see in this pic the original oil groove and pipe, if you look close you can see the pipe is only just over the oil groove...
So after I had made the oil groove a bit longer it looked a bit better, but like I said I wanted to make sure the pipe was held better...
This is what I came up with to hold the pipe better...
and the finished product...
Gave it a good run today slicing a guys silky oak and was very pleased, had oil going where I wanted and also had the plastic pipe staying where I wanted it toI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
