Default Skip tooth 3/8 chain info.

    Hi guys.
I have been using 3/8 Stihl skip tooth, square tooth, super chisel chain with great success for many years for felling and cutting in the forests in clean, green timber. However, I am doing a lot of salvage work around the Victorian flood areas and the wood is gritty from flood debris. Can anyone recommend a brand that makes 3/8 skip tooth in a semi-chisel or similar that will stand up to the dirtier logs, or is it easier to just grind my own skip tooth from a standard chain? Any thoughts appreciated.
    Cheers
    James

As a new feller I ve been using carlton round shouldered semi chisel A2 On gum top Iron bark
thats all fire damaged and a mix of decomposed granite sand dragged up by last years wet an termites , I d like to learn more about why you d use skip for felling one of the other fellers uses it for spotty but he s from the gippsland area trees grow a bit quicker down that way I hear. Iknow the semi chisel makes sharpening much easer and quicker

    Thanks itsposs for the info.

I have used super chisel skip tooth over the years, mainly in apline hardwood forests and on redgum for several reasons.

Firstly, is quicker to sharpen but very unforgiving if not sharpened propery. If poorly sharpened it will cut banannas and rip the chrome off very quick. Secondly, the fewer teeth creates less drag when the longer bars are in full depth, which keeps your revs up, hence chain speed up, and minimises chain stretch. The skip tooth cuts just as quick in any clean timber.
However, super chisel hates dirty timber, white ant pipes, any of the box species or touching the ground. I find it strange that some of the smaller handyman saws come of the shelf with square super chisel on as standard, only to give the weekend firewood collector endless grief.
    Cheers for the research.

Have you checked with Forum member Sawchain? He has access to all sorts of specials and weird stuff. It would not surprise me if he does not have some rolls stashed away somewhere.

I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

I tend to trust 404 in dirty logs before 3/8, just my 2 cents

dunno bout the 404 but semichisel will cut almost as quick and will last longer in dirty wood. Chipper may last even longer but is slower and unless you are running an 090 088/880 or maybe a 3120 or big mac or homie then 3/8 is it. personally I have had 3/8 semichisel skip on a 42 inch bar on a 660 fully buried and used all my 105 kgs on the dogs without it bogging in a crosscut no probs and cut a lot of wood like it!
