Slabbing chain
Hi
just asking anyone out there who may be able to help me I am chasing a few rolls of slabbing chain having trouble sourcing it in WA just wondering where the best and cheapest place would be to buy some.

The only difference between regular chain and slabbing chain is the top plate filing angle is around 10º for the slabbing chain as compared to 25 or so degrees for regular chain.
However, you can still use normal chain and every time you sharpen it just hoike the angle down a few degrees till you get to the 10º.
Of you can sharpen it new to 10º before you start cutting.

The 10 degree angle gives a smoother finish but is slower cutting. Conversely the standard angle is faster but leaves a rougher finish.

Thanks yeh I have a few chains I'm using now that I have cut back to 10deg the chain im using now and trying to find more of is a oregon chain specificaly used for slabbing it only has 2 opposing teeth for ever 11 links and cuts like magic and over a 6 ft cutting bar less teeth to sharpen I have chain breakers so I am able to make my own chain up but just cannot find rolls of chain to suite. Thanks anyway

Give "sawchain" a message from here - I buy my chain from him, works out almost half the price I can get it anywhere else....
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Thanks for the thoughts in this thread.
I'm a novice in the world of slabbing, and read on the arborist forum that - unless someone's reasonably experienced in using skip-tooth chain- that it can be unpredictable. It was recommended to use semi-chisel or full-chisel chain.
I've got a 42" bar on a Husky 394xp, but need chain.
I reckon I'll only be slabbing occasionally, so was wondering what TYPE of chain you guys would recommend.
...appreciated.

For anyone just doing the occasional log I recommend the chain they already have on their saw. Just make sure the cutters are sharp and the rakers are set correctly for the amount of cutter wear.
This does not mean using a simple 0.025" setting. The rakers should be set at a depth below the cutters equal to at least 1/10 of the gullet width.

Originally you were looking for rolls of chain but now it seems you are only going to be cutting slabs occasionally.
Either way "Sawchain" may be your best bet. I received a new bar with chain to suit from him today. My old Solo was well past it's due date for the new bar. If you wish I will forward his contact details (which were given to me by Sigidi )via a PM .

Thanks BobL and Bushmiller,
Bushmiller, I've tried sending 'Sawchain' a number of PMs. He got one of them, but hasn't responded to the others. He said he's having issues receiving notifications or something (?).
If you think he'd be ok with it, then yep - his contact details would be great, thanks.
