    Default Slabbing some Silky Oak

    Hi all,
looking for advice on cutting up some silky oak.

i have two halves of a 6 long tree trunk. It's about 20" dia.

i slabbed one half at 2 1/2 " thick, alternating the cut sides so as to achieve a quarter sawn result.

    See here: http://geoffmonty.blogspot.com.au/20...ished-now.html

im pleased with the result in terms of straight and true, but the 'silky oak speckle' i was hoping to find is not very evident.

any thoughts on an alternative cut before I start on the second half?

    thanks in anticipation.

    cheers Geoff.

For the best ray fleck (speckle) it has to be cut right on the medullary rays, it only takes a little angle change and the pattern quickly reverts to the mesh/lace pattern, the smaller the tree the harder it is to achieve the speckle for boards of any width.

Hi Pete, many thanks for the information. I took a section and cut it at small changing angles and indeed the speckle appeared and disappeared again. Cheers Geoff.

    No worries Geoff,
Just to add the M. rays are the thin lines that radiate out from the pith (center of the log), look on the end of the log/board, if you know all that ignore my ramblings or for more info google medullary rays.
