    Default Started on a blackwood

    Well after a crap day yesterday and chasing the neighbors sheep all morning and fixing fences I finaly got back on the mill. this blackwood passed away a oops I mean or is it . Anyhow see if you think it will compete with DJ's at, https://www.woodworkforums.com/186097-pics-milling/ . Personally I think his trumps mine but mine seems to be a bit unusual. There's a bit of fiddle and dare I say Tiger in this one. I'm continuously fascinated in how one tree can be so different to another of the same species and in the same ground within a few hundred metres of each other.

    I'm cutting 220x75 for shallow bowl blanks. 75x75 for pepper grinder blanks. Yes Neil the offcuts will be cut25x25 for pen blanks
    One thing that I'm wondering is, is there a market for table sets ie, 150x30 boards for the tops 100x25 for frame and 100x100 for legs.
    Can anyone tell me?

    Some nice pieces there Tim

    In regards to sizes for tables, is that dressed size or rough cut?

    Personally I would cut them at say 140x40 and 180x50 thick and the legs at 125x125 for big tables and 100x100 for the smaller ones
    Cheers

    We've seen box sets and uke sets, why not table sets? Sounds like a great idea. Terrific piece of wood.

    Dai Sensei has dropped in for a couple days on his way to the TurnSA event this weekend. He's just been supervising. It's been a while but I finally finished this log today. Me uncle was back with a blackwood and two small redgum windfalls to mill so I got it finished. These pics are in sequence from one end of the slab to the other;

    This ones a close up.

    Some nice bits in there Tim, even though some of it looks ordinary, it can really shine once it's been dried and machined. I've never seen a boring bit of Blackwood

    I forgot to update this. I finnished it a few days later and it's all stickered and stacked. The first pic is of the log after the couple days. A big colour change! The second pic is the slab I was left with after flipping it and milling down the other side. New kitchen bench for"she who must be obeyed".

    I got the head of the log done yesterday and cut out a few turning blanks for platters and bowls.

    looks like some nice plates and bowls could be turned from that blackwood. A table with 2 slabs edge joined with tinted glass and tapered legs.similar to what is below but with natural edges on the inside and outside. Cheers WC
