Howdy All,

Picked up a Stihl 023 at a garage sale in Bendigo this morning. The owner said he hadn't used it for awhile, and just wanted to get rid of it.

The saw LOOKED good, compression seemed fine, and it didn't look like it'd had a lot of use.

After some wheeling and dealing, I handed over $10 (!) and drove off.

Went home, fresh fuel, cleaned the air filter, checked spark (fine), yanked the cord a few times and..... nothing.

took it into the local Stihl blokes who said it was sucking in air at the seal between crankcase & cylinder head.

They quoted me $150-$200 to strip it down and reseal it.

I've been looking for a new project of late, and was wondering:

IS THIS A JOB I COULD DO MYSELF?

I service my Stihl brushcutter and mower, but haven't ever resealed a small engine before. I've got all the tools, and will track down a manual for the saw.

Is there anyone in the Bendigo area who would be willing to offer some advice / help, please?

...any thoughts, suggestions, etc would be very much appreciated.

thanks,
Phil
