Just for a bit of a wrap up; I was taking the covers off to clean the saw up for all the work I was about to do, i took the (loose) muffler off to have a look at the scoring I was told was there- hence new cylinder / piston required, and everything looked good. I reckon the dealer who checked it thought they could sell a new saw. Who'd have thought..?
I put in fresh fuel and gave the air filter a clean. Squirt of aerostart on the filter and she started first pull... Idle is a bit rough but apart from that it's a ripper. So now I have a good saw that cost me about an hour or so of attention (I got it free because it had been written off as too expensive to fix). Just needs a new bar and tune up I think. Happy as a pig in the proverbial. The bonus is that I've learned a lot through doing all the research and through your good selves, so once again thanks for all your help.
Cheers, Eo
