Thread: Storm damage

I haven't personally seen any (I'm on the right side of town to have avoided the damage), but there are photos in the paper showing large heaps of trees that are being collected in the affected areas. Only problem is that there looks like so much of it they way not appreciate somebody in the way. OTOH they would probably be grateful for an extra chainsaw...

Same goes for me in the Ipy redbank area. or even the gap. I have found one tree and am getting it through the mill on the weekend. Hoping they do not just chip the rest.

yep there are trees up to 800mm diameter and over 20m long down. logs every ware. most are on top of houses or power lines and energex and the army are cutting them into blocks to get them off.

wont let anyone close cos of the danger. believe me i have asked. best bet is talk to owners with trees in there back yard.

I haven't been to Bris or Tamborine, but someone from work had a large branch fall on her car here on the Gold Coast. Council workers chopped it up to free her car and stacked the timber on the kerb. She contacted me and I was there the next morning, but it was already gone

Spoke to a friend of mine in The Gap, and yes there are logs everywhere. When all dies down a bit I will be visiting him with trailer.

May be a naive question, but I really have no idea. Is Fig good for anything? Does anybody want it? I'll need to get a lopper in to bring the rest down, anybody (with insurance) out there want the job? At Guanaba. (Gold Coast hinterland)

brilliant to turn and surprisingly nice grain.

i dont have insurance to cut it down but i sure would like the logs only thing is my trailer ain't done (or started) yet.

could i cut ti there and remove it in slabs? maby you want some?

thaught i should ask before i commit is it sound? and what size?

us volunteer rural fire fighters got kicked out of the gap yesterday the councils gonna do it.

I had a meeting today with someone from Brisbane on a large block. Heaps of trees down every where he said. The SES had already removed all the trees around the house, but there were quite a few down throughout the block they left behind (not posing danger to life or property). He said the biggest one was a 6' dia grey gum, but quite a few blown over still in tact, roots and all.

I suggested a few of my friends could come and remove the big trunks and mill them up, that way he would only need the mulcher for the limbs and leaves. He said he had lost quite a few fences and could use some posts from the trunks, but I was welcome to the rest. I said I'm sure we could come to a deal .

Still a lot of storms about, just hit here on the Gold Coast, so I'll leave it till the weekend. I thought I would go up for a look to check out trees and access on Saturday.

we need rails for a lot of fence repairs round the area.

there are lots of fences down the bay after last night. the bloke next doors 3 horses got washed down the creek. haven't found them yet.

i can cut posts from them to if he needs it done.

I've been at the Gap and Brookfield since Monday, mostly removing trees from houses. We've done 8 homes so far, all of which are basically write-offs. The place is devastated. As for logs, most fallen timber is quite small or badly shattered, although there are some sizeable logs among the debris. In terms of salvage, everyone has been more concerned about making things safe and clearing the mess than about salvaging anything. Having said that, I've managed to get a few logs home, including a couple of very large grey gums (E. Propinqua), a couple of silky oaks and several spotties. The E. Propinquas have fared worst, which I suspect is due to root damage over the years of drought. There are many spotties and others that have had the crown snap off, once again probably due to drought debilitation.

I doubt there'll be anythng much worth milling left by the end of next week, except for those trees that are still standing minus a crown, which will have to be dropped at some time.
