Default Big stringy with fiddleback and great colour.

This tree was my favourite tree on the place. It is the biggest of all the stringy's on the 60acres if not the whole district. Now before some of you start jumping up and down; let me hastily add that it did die of natural causes about 2 years ago. ( I've lost a few trees over the past few years for no apparent reason). Who knows how old it is. It's 11-1200 at the base and about 7-800 at the top. 5.5m long to the solid base of the root ball. Every mm is fiddleback (even the bark)

So we went away for our anniversary and the whole time we're away I'm thinking of what I'll find (is that wrong of me?) With a lot of white ant damage in the upper limbs I was a bit worried I'd find a 3-400mm pipe in the main log. No sooner did we get home and I was out there to do some cutting to prep the log for milling. Now for me that's a bit of a dilemma. Always wanting to get the best out of a log and never sure that's what I'm getting. Always second guessing. Anyhow at the moment I think that floor boards is a great way to go. We have a lot of floor that needs redoing and I'm thinking if we want to sell there should be a good opportunity to sell it when seasoned. ( If anyone would like to give some advice that would be appreciated)

Especially with this piece pictured below. I'm thinking

I started trimming the roots to get it in the mill and was gob smacked at what I found (below). The colour in the roots is so dark! The last pic looks like blackwood and all the roots are fiddleback aswell. What you recon Neil? Pen blanks I spose

    anyhow, watch this space.

Smaller bits and scraps for pen blanks. Those forks look like beautiful bowl/turning blanks, plus a few box making pieces, likewise the roots.

Certainly got some work ahead of you, hope your son is there still to help. Don't brake your back mate

Okay I know I said soon but as some may know soon can sometimes be just a little longer than we hoped. Now what you are about to see may surprise you but I still haven't got to this with the mill yet. What I can show you is a few small pieces that I cut out of those dark roots. Now as I said in the first post "I was gobsmacked when I trimmed some of the roots. Well I put some of the smaller ones over the band saw and guess what! "Gobsmacked again"! and again and again. I kept cutting till the saw was dead blunt. Couldn't believe my eyes. Some of the pieces coming out don't resemble stringy at all! OOOOh! So excited! I'm sorry are there too many exclamation marks here?
Anyhow does anyone recognize this as stringy 'cause I don't. Yet here it is. The photos don't do them justice. One day I'll learn to get gooder photos. The darker areas are very dark, between cadbury milk and dark chocolate. The fiddle is the finest I've ever seen!

I kept cutting and ended up with a box full of pen blanks. Anyone want to buy some? I haven't got to the larger pieces yet band saw broke. Repairs required.
So; guess what came next? I dug up the hole again and dragged out all the pieces of roots I could find. Praise God for the excavator.
I'm in Tassie (arrived this morning) and have these pieces in my pocket every where I go so that I can whip them out and show them off at any opportunity.
P.S. Anyone want to buy me a coffee to have a look? We're in Evendale then heading to St Helens, Sat or Sun. Ok, you don't have to buy me a coffee but you can have a look.

Can you believe it; Oct and I finally got to the stringy with some help from a mate. 1/2 still to go next Wed. some really nice boards coming out too. lots of tiger n figure. I've cut all 150 x28 and will have them put through a moulder for flooring for me. Sorry guys and gals. All the small bits will be turning blanks of one form or another. I've already cut up heap of pen/knife blanks. I finally made a decision with the log and took off the top1500 to minimize waste just means some short boards to mix in.

More done yesterday. The main log is finished and put to bed. Put the half on the liquid amber and cut down to leave a 55mm slab; so cool!
