Talking to a fella the other day who told me he used old telephone poles as the main support structures for his house. The ones he picked were solid as and he soaked them in sump oil. 20 odd years later he's up in the roof and guess what's coming out of the top of the main central pole - yep, termites. This pole is not touching anything from roof to the ground so they're not coming in anywhere else.

FWIW the local council, when they had charge of old wood lamp posts for sale, reckoned the round ones were soaked with creosote and so not a good idea for firewood, and the faceted ones weren't. Dunno why the difference in treatment or what effect it had on rot underground.

the faceted poles are called de-sap poles which have had the sapwood removed, I'd have thought they would have had some type of surface treatment as well where they went in the ground

I would still get some Termidor into the post hole. You'll get at least 8 years-probably 12 or more.

I noticed that this poster. ( Sorry, that was not meant to be a pun. ) above post was his first, so I hope he answers my following question , either to me here or by PM through this forum.

I was under the impression that Termidor was only available to a licensed Pest Controller. Where do we mere mortals find a suply.

    Hi Pete,
Mere Mortals can purchase Termidor, however the application is to be done by a qualified applicator...

I was simply providing information on the best way to protect timber in the ground.

'Mabons' timber protect is another product which is readily available to the public. Also much less expensive than Termidor.
