A TC Marcia Silky Oak
Just some pics of a reasonable SO that fell over, about 700 at the butt, there are three nice straight clean pieces about 1.8m long.
SO first cut.jpglong shot middle.jpgcloseup middle.jpgsetting up to quarter.jpg
With the tilt trailer, winch and crane I can drag them onto the trailer to cut them up, basically I cut them into thick sections then further reduce them to boards on the bandsaw, I can manipulate them on the BS to best cut them on the 1/4, the last pic I am setting up to freehand split it down the middle with the small saw as it was too big to handle.

A few more pics
Just a few more pics
board.jpgcloseup board.jpgcube or more.jpggrief.jpg
Using the BS to cut some nice boards, I like to cut a variety of thicknesses, at a guess I have over a cube with maybe another log to go.
I encountered one offending piece of metal in the shape of a broken off roofing screw, it was laying down and level with the outside of the cutters, I didn't realize at the time but it took the side off the cutters, the tops looked fine thus I couldn't work out why the saw wouldn't cut, ended up giving me grief for a bit

Nice set of boards. I didn't recognise it as silky until the second photo in your 2nd post. Shame about the screw, metal in trees is always a pain

Very nice PJT
Could you please elaborate on how you are holding/positioning the cants on the bandsaw to saw on the quarter?
I can't quite make it out from your pics.

Art, I would reckon it would be G. robusta, has a nice pink colour to it when first cut which goes quite pale as it is drying, comes up nice tho with some finish on it.
Hi John,
I have a pair of sleds that roll on a track, I can clamp the cant to the sled/s to stop it moving, I find tho I only need to use the clamping when I have a round log or in this case setting up a piece on the 45, that is why the piece in the background is all funny angles.
I have posted pics in the bandsaw forum in the past showing a bit more of the sled/s, I'll see if I can find them shortly.

Pete - apologies for this very late reply - I missed your post.
Thanks for showing the sleds for the bandsaw.
