How can you tell the difference between a real 090 or a 090 replica?
Have an opportunity to purchase a Stihl 090 in excellent condition but I'm not sure if its a fake or not. The elderly gentlemen who owns it doesn't use it and couldn't tell me if it was fake but brought it new about 5 yrs ago. Would be really grateful for some advice.
Thx

When I bought my 090 in '83 or '84 I was told by Stihl that it was the last one they had in Australia as they weren't allowed to sell them because they didn't have a chain brake. Not sure if it was the last or not......
If he bought it new 5 years ago it could have been imported from some country that was allowed to use them.
The Chinese copied the 070 but I've never heard of a fake 090.
Can you post some pics?

The 070 and 090 look identical but just have different bores.
Unless it says it is an 090 it will almost certainly be an 070 chinese knockoff - I've hear of people getting caught with this before.
Good saw ? I don't know much about the reliability of the non-German made 090 or 070, but as a saw it depends what you are doing.
As a saw design they're heavy as and they vibrate like hell. They're great fun to use for about 15 minutes hour and then, unless you are a hard core logger, they get heavier and heavier, and your hands, arms and shoulders turn to jelly. I guess if you need a good physical workout they are a good saw.
I'd buy an original as a curio, but for day to day sawing I'd get a lighter saw with good low vibe characteristics.

I reckon it's a Chinese 070, 105cc 070 large gasoline power chain saw/105cc M S070 chain saw/105cc M S070 chain wood saw/105cc stihl wood cutter/070 chainsaw-in Chainsaw from Home Improvement on Aliexpress.com
Interestingly the Stihl 070 was 106cc.
The 090 had a larger starter diameter as can be seen here, Stihl 090 AV Antivibration Chainsaw Best 090 Chain Saw Ever Listed 60 inch Bar | eBay
Also the 090 had a bigger clutch that was partly exposed below the clutch cover, pic 7 in the above link.
Of course the 090 had a bigger bore and cylinder taking it to 137 cc as well.
The saw you're looking at ( and the Chinese one) has the original non anti vibration handles whilst later 070/090s had 2 versions of AV handles.

I agree with Bedford, and as the TV program says, "It's a knock off"
The fact that the label is missing on such a new machine is somewhat disturbing.
Does said gentleman remember where he bought it and how much he paid for it?

These come up on ebay from time to time. They're not worth the plastic they're made of. Someone should go to China and pull their ears.

The saw to look for to use on a chainsaw mill is a Stihl 084. It has no governors and is lighter than an 090. Being a much higher revving saw, in smaller logs where chain speed is significant the 084 will out cut the 090 unless the rakers are dropped significantly on the 090 and then you won't be able to use that chain on bigger logs. The difference in cutting times in big logs is not that significant as all chainsaw milling is slow due to longer setting up times and wood handling.
How big are the logs you are looking to mill?

Our property is on the wimmera river and we have some large flood plains and the majority of the trees are red gum. They can vary in size but the stuff l have my eye on could 4-5ft thick and there is other small timber laying around. What would be the best chainsaw mill you would recommend?
