Welcome to the forums. This site has a lot of info so your best friend is to learn how to search this site.

In terms of chainsaws, the 3616 is too small for milling. The 460 at 60 cc and recommended bar size of 13 to 20" , is borderline even for small logs.

A conventional alaskan mill consumes about 6" of bar length so even if you put a 20" bar on the 460 you will be limited to 14" diam logs.
I would keep the 460 for use on something like a minimill to break up slabs into dimensioned lumber.

A 395 or 660 with a 42" bar should enable you to cut 36" wide logs. This means buying or making a mill that can open up that wide.

I have 4 CS mills (all home made) f you want to come and look at some of my setups PM me.

    Hi Bob,

Ive just acquired one of the Westfords at the show and recently purchased a 2nd hand 660 and while not wanting to gatecrash, I would love to soak up some of your knowledge if you wanted to make a class of it.

    Regards
    Mick

Yep I'd be happy to run an informal a class. However I don't want to do it at the milling yard as there would be OHS and insurance issues. We need someone with private land and a log to demo on.

All my Chainsaw milling stuff and HEAPS of pictures are described in grimy detail on my this forum. The quickest way to find the relevant links is to follow the link near my username to my blog.
Look in the 2007 - 2009 section for lots of mill builds and pics.

    will the chainsaw last?
A 570 is on the small side - it also has a lowish max RPM (9600). It would be OK for logs upto about 450 mm in diam at most. Milling saws need to be looked after. Chains needs to be kept razor sharp touch up every 32 sq ft of hard stuff and 64 sq ft of soft stuff. Carby settings (not fuel mix ratio) should be set a little richer than usual and don't push the hell of of the saw. If you are constantly pushing to keep the saw cutting the setup is not right.

Well like I said, I have space, a few logs and a BBQ. Maybe some weekend with some decent weather we can get together.

This is some learning that I look forward to, but as your the source of this gratefully accepted knowledge a date and time of your choosing would be fine with me...... subject to the vagaries of the future.

    Look forward to meeting you!

I'll try not to say too much - mainly demo and answer questions.
