Default Timber species used in tile roof battens 50 years ago?

I've been given a bunch of old battens after a tile roof was recently replaced in Melbourne but I'm unsure what species it is - there is a reddish tinge to it but it doesn't look like red gum - does anyone have any ideas? Its drier than dry!

OK I've put them through the thicknesser to clean them up and here's the pics - will probably turn out that it is pine or something like that.W1.jpgW2.jpgW3.jpg

Unusual choice for battens. Normally battens for a tile roof were (and still are) rough sawn hardwood. I have seen Oregon used for corrugated iron and these can have a reddish tinge

I was hoping that it was going to be hardwood - no such luck unfortunately!

Has some prominent grain - it might look nice as a pen but I'm guessing the timber would be too soft for a pen
