Tour de forumite
In a recent thread Sigidi reckons Alaska would be a goer for the fish and forests which bought me to thinking. Wouldnt it be cool to actually meet each other on a Woodwork Forum Tour! Lets say give it 2 years of planning and saving the $ and go of to i dont know, Canada, Vietnam, the USA or somewhere in Europe on a tour visiting sawmills and other attractions and get to know each other other than via the net . Simple question really, who would be interested?

I agree this sort of a tour would be a lot of fun, finding dedicated time to do it is another matter.
The thing that has really worked for me it getting onto an international milling forum and making friends with some of the folks in those interesting places. Then when I just happen to be traveling in those parts I set aside a few days to catch up with some of these people. These folks are incredible and just love to show you around.
Just in case you haven't seen the stuff I have posted before.

I was thinking about this kind of trip for a while, I've been talking to a bunch of Lucas owners/millers around the world; Solomon Islands, Ghana West Africa, Pennsylvania US, UK.
My idea was to take my mill with me and mill on every continentI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

this might be from left field, but i'm wondering if you could tie it in with something like the world chainsaw carving competition.i'm sure some of the people who do that would know portable sawmillers.but it's just a thought.and i'd love to see some of the things bobl has seen

Good idea, making it happen might be hard. What about making it happen in Australia first. I.E. we make a point of all going to south west WA. next year, then maybe meeting in say the southeast of south australia the year after or the lumber country of southeast NSW/eastern victoria. It would be more affordable and I assume a lot of us have families and such and OZ has a lot to offer.
Mind you I could handle seeing some more of the sequoias and the rocky mountains and such.I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

It is a good idea. I've been doing something similar, only in Australia each year to somewhere different meeting at a BBQ, so far VIC, NSW, WA, TAS and ACT.

I am guessing Queensland is out for the near future at least, unless we go by boat.
W.A. is the exact opposite I am told and would need some rain before we started any saws so we didn't start a bushfire as well. I would like to go back to the southwest though.
I would help organize things should everyone decide that they would like to head victoria way, but as far as knowing where all the milling hubs are around here I reckon that there would be people better qualified than myself for suggestions. I would be better off being a tour guide in W.A. I know more about the milling there than here. That said there are quite a few mills around my area here, and places we could go and cut some big logs.
so my conclusion is that I would like to head back to the west, or nsw or qld for that matter, but if people want to come this way I will help to organize things. It is a nice end of the country.I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Im happy to put my hand up to organise a tour here in WA along with a bit of help from other WA forumites On the sawmilling side of things there could be a visit to Harvey to the log auction yard, Pemberton to the big karri mill, and a couple of local mills here in Busselton and Nannup. I also know a few Lucas and woodmizer owners we could visit and see how they go about things which is more along the lines of what we do, and what ever else we can think of. To me its not about all of that but actually getting together and meeting each other and seeing and talking about what we enjoy doing

Agreed but it would be nice to organize some time fillers like mill tours and seeing some of the country as well while doing it, maybe even have a bit of a play with the different mills and such that we all have, to see what we do do, and could do differently, and see how the timbers there cut differently to here etc.
Guess we all need to decide what we think would be a good trip for the starter. put your dibs in people and let us know what you think. if you want to go to WA write : W.A. for me, For eastern vic write : East vic for me , For the people who are interested in ballarat/ bendigo sort of area write that etc.etc.
Let the thread run for a month or so, we will take a tally of who wants to go where, then work out dates places etc.
OH and by the way my pick is W.A. for a starter.I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
