One way of determining the viability of a standing tree is to spear the chainsaw in verticaly. The resultring saw dust will give an indication of what is within. This method causes minimal damage to the tree.

I am guessing we are better off dropping them then cutting into the appropriate lengths for milling to see what they are like inside before we actually organise to get them milled...
(need a blooming bigger chainsaw for that!)
